Where does the GOP go?

What's next for the Republican party?

Do they need to rebuild their base?
Redefine themselves?
Just wait for the momentum to shift (and if so, how long will they have to wait)?

Check out the county-by-county election results- they are, in some ways, more interesting than the state-by-states (use "County leaders" in the below link): http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/results/president/map.html

i think that they have to rebuild their reputation.
they got a bad rep with bush and everything that
has happened in the last few years. i think they just
need to work on their rep and wait for the momentum
shift and take advantage of it.

obama won because the majority of the people believed the united states was going in the wrong direction which happened to be the direction of the republicans. if mccain had won then that means the majority thinks we are on the right path. im not sure if they should redifine themselve but wait till the time is right for their plans to be set into motion. the united states is in major need of change which is perfect for obama. once things are set im sure the republicans can come back into power

I believe that the country is still center right as it has been in the past, but because of the economic crisis, the GOPs couldnt recover. I believe in the next election in 2012 it will tighten again and become the horse race it has been in past years such as 2000 and 2004

Give them Repubs 8 more years until people will change their minds back into Republicanism. It will just teeter-totter back n' forth.

I think that 2006 was definitely a momentous shift to the left and last night proved that. I believe that the 2012 will depend on the success of Obama's presidency. If he is able to maintain the amount of hope and goodwill he has inspired, then I think it will be another landslide. If not, it will be close.

Frankly I think the Republicans should plan on taking back control of Congress before anything else to get back the "Divided We Govern" that they will need to get at least some legislation passed.

They can go on to the presidency once they gain some ground.

i think the next move for the GOP depends greatly on the outcome of Obama's presidency

however i think that the country as a whle desires change
and that direction is to the left

so the momentum may be with the dems for now
but eventually it will shift back

when exactly?
2012
too close

maybe in 2020

i think they need to get their priorities and tactics straight. i believe they have become too corrupt and need to grow up and become a bit more classy. just give everyone a little more respect, even if they dont agree with you.

I think the republicans should move away from social issues and fearmongering and more towards smaller government and protecting constitutional rights.

i don't believe it is completley necessary for the republicans to rebuild their base, i believe that McCain was a great and fair candidate, and if he had executed his campaign flawlessly he would have become president, i believe that the republican just have to fine tune their execution.
and i believe that it will also be dependent on Obama's term as president will either weaken the republican party or boost them.

I think the Republicans should work on redefining themselves, and improving their tactics... However if Obama messes up, I think the U.S. might favor a republican again
