An Airbag for Automakers?

Should the auto companies be allowed to partake in the bailout?  Paulson says no; Obama says yes.  Where do we draw the line - which companies should be entitled to financial assistance and which should be permitted to fail?  Should it be based on number of employees?  % of GDP created?  Historical significance/prominence?  No one at all?

i do believe that the 'Big Three' should be part of the bail out, however i don't believe it should be done with TARP, but instead the department of energy programme. This would prevent other companies from asking to receive financial aid from tarp and create more economically sound vehicles. It will also help earth with these new fuel efficient cars. Do to the amount invested in these companies i believe it is absolutly necessary to help, only upon conditions. However due to the fact that the 'Big Three' all make gas guzzling trucks, they would have to become pretty desperate for money to comply with these conditions.

it's not the job of the government to bail anybody out, but since it's already been done i think the car companies should get some help, too.

its the car companies fault for sitting around on their butts and making crap cars for so long. they got themselves into this mess. why cant the oil companies help them? everyone knows they got some crazy conspiracy stuff going on. gas guzzling cars, high oil prices. they (oil cos, big 3) dont care how we feel, live or how we spend out money, so long as it is on their nasty cars.

this whole thing is ridiculous. i want my bailout check.

I agree with Allie. No bailout for the big 3. Let them fall on their asses and then maybe they'll come back with better cars.

We should only help those who are producing a large number of environmentally friendly cars. And since most of them are not, and continue to sell(shame on consumers as well) their pick-up trucks that only get 10 mpg, let them suffer...

Everyone is going to be asking for help now, gosh. I saw this story on GMA this morning and they said the CEO's all flew to D.C. in their private jets! Now is that really necessary? Why don't they sell their $36 million planes! Here's the link to the ABC story about their private jets..yikes

I'm disgusted...what about the little mom & pop shops? They won't be getting
