Blue Man Group- Calling in "Gay" to Work

Some same-sex marriage supporters are urging people to "call in gay" Wednesday to show how much the country relies on gays and lesbians, but others question whether it's wise to encourage skipping work given the nation's economic distress. Organizers of "Day Without a Gay" also are encouraging people to perform volunteer work and refrain from spending money

Sean Hetherington, a West Hollywood comedian and personal trainer, dreamed up the idea with his boyfriend, Aaron Hartzler. The couple thought it would be more effective and less divisive if people were asked to perform community service instead of staying home with their wallets shut. Dozens of nonprofit agencies, from the National Women's Law Center in Washington to a Methodist church in Fresno collecting food for the homeless, have posted opportunities for volunteers on the couple's Web site.

Do you think this is an effective form of protest?
Or should we stick to rallying?

I think "calling in gay" would get you fired in a lot of places. I know I'd get fired for skipping work. But volunteering is always a good thing. However I don't think this will get anything accomplished as far as gay rights go.

this is putting those peoples job at risk, but it is their right to protest this way i guess. Just may hurt them in the long run. I think id just stick to the usual Ranting with paper attatched to sticks, marching like im in the British army.

I think its going to be effective. Obviously the intolerant aren't immediately going to see the error of their ways but its a modern day equivalent to sit ins. Baby steps are what people who care about their equality need.

i do not think that it will be very effective.
and i think that it puts their jobs at risk.
but they have the right to protest in any way they want.

id like to see if it would even have a impact haha
but maybe they should be thinking about their jobs first if they get fired its likely they wont get a job back for a while with the economy the way it is now

I think this is ridiculous. What is it going to prove? I'm for gay rights, but this is dumb. All it is going to do is make people upset because those who do show up for work will have to do more because some coworkers would be missing. This will back fire if it actually happens and will hurt the movement.

Immigrant workers tried this a few years ago when immigration was a hot topic, and it back fired on them, plus many lost their jobs. I think it will create more resentment than anything else.

i agree with robby.

I mean it has potential. But if it backfires, it would be a complete waste.

i think some of the people would get fired because some people are anit-gay, and it could also risk their well being.

people who are willing to do this, like if they truley thought they would get fired after this they probably wont do this, and since when did calling in "sick" get you fired, and theyre encouraging you to volunteer not just sit on your butt cause your gay.AND Cesar Chavez boycotted Grapes and such a little bit ago to help get immigrant workers a higher pay and it worked so.. whatever i think it'll work.

yes, you won't get fired for calling in sick, but that's not what the article is about. It is saying for people to call in "gay". To call in sick would not be participating in the protest. And this isn't like the sit-ins during the Civil Rights Movement because those involved people doing simple actions, like sitting at a diner counter until they were served food, or dragged out of the store. This won't show people how denying them rights is wrong, it is just going to make them look selfish. In our society today, perception seems to be everything.

yeah, i don't think this is really going to do all that much. i see what they're trying to get at, but unless they can get a large majority of gays to participate, and that's not extremely likely considering the economic situation, i don't think that it's going to have the impact that gay rights activists desire.

That is the worst idea i have heard in my life! its not going to do anything espically since our economy is in the toilet right now. And plus their boss could fire them like that for callin in gay.

rallying would prob be a better idea, that way it doesnt cause more problems that we already have. skipping work could create problems with co-workers, managers, bosses or even hurt the company in ways.

I think people will only get annoyed and more bitter if they did this. Insted of people saying to themselves "We depend on gays more than we thought. We should treat them better." people might say "If they are going to pull stuff like this we should find a way to get along with out them "
