Dozens die in Guatemala landslide (Moosemist)

On Sunday at least 33 people have died in a huge landslide in a northern area of Guatemala and many more are missing. Thousands of tons of rock collapsed on the road in the Alta Verapaz area, 200km north of Guatemala. This same area was hit by a rockfall just last month killing at least 2 people. The main road in which the area was hit, was reported as closed since last months rockfall, however it has been reported that more then 140 people have ignored the closing of the road and continue to use it. That is one of the reasons for so many deaths in this recent landslide.

Do you think there should be more percautions taken by the government to prevent people from putting their own lives in danger? Or should these people have been more aware of the risk they were taking by using this road?

i think the people should have been more aware of the risks. Most of them probably witness the rock fall in the past.
But the government could have put up some kind of effective road block or provided clearly marked detour routes.

Theirs always going to be "rebels", but their should definetly be more precautions so that people know that something jurassic can actually happen.

are these people that are dying educated enough to even be able to read a warning sign if one was put in place? if not, it's definitely the governments job to find a way to warn these people so that more of these deaths can be prevented.

The government should put up warning signs and that's it. They shouldn't be babysitting people. If people get hurt on a road that they're told not to use then it's their own fault.

i think the government shouldve taken more precautions, but I also doubt they have enough money to do things like that...and the roads are completely necessary, they use it for their jobs and everything, its a way they make livings.

i think the government can only do so much. they should put warning signs up, and make an attempt to warn, but no one promises the people are gonna care or pay attention.
