Polish man streams his suicide on Internet

A polish man streamed his suicide live on an Internet chat site.  He logged on Sunday and hung himself in front of the camera.  Officials say he had been drinking earlier that day to celebrate his 27th birthday and had told his friends he had a surprise for them.  His friends reported he had been acting strange and very depressed.

Do you think that the Internet should be more strictly monitered to prevent such situations and other dangers on the Web?  If so, how?

yes, because people all over the world of all ages go on the internet. that isn't something that should be seen by viewers. i have no idea how they would monitor that, i'm not an internet pro.

I do think that the Internet should be more strictly monitored, but then the question becomes: 'How,' if it IS even possible. I do agree with Erin's point that people of all ages can see everything the Internet has to offer, but I think it would be almost impossible to create more strict guidelines, because after all, it is the 'World Wide Web.' Similar examples would be when Saddam Hussein's execution was secretly recorded and streamed on Youtube, and when the man who was responsible for the VT shootings had a video on the web before the event. And even though they were quickly taken off-line[as far as I know], millions of people had already seen them.
Overall, I do think that it should be, but I don't think it is possible.

wow, that's horrible.
i agree with the 2 other repliers..
internet is a source that everyone uses
from kids to grandparents..
On the internet there are many things that are
not appropriate but hey internet is internet and its
commonly used worldwide
its impossible to create strict guidelines...

this example proves internet is one powerful, scary thing.

i also think that many viewers would take offense in the man's public display of death. Some find death very private & sacred, a taboo...

I do think that the internet should be more strictly monitored but even if this was to happen, I don't think that it's possible for things such as this to be prevented. It's really sad to learn about the attention people crave cry Also, I agree with the others who have responded to this post. It is really hard to monitor and I know that this is not something I would want even myself to stumble upon while on the internet.

I beleive that the internet should monitor the enternet close and careful. I also think that theres always going to be corruption of some sort posted on the enternet and cannot be removed right away therefore computer monitoring she be nessesary definetly when it comes to enternet postings of death.

I dont believe that the internet needs to be monitored anymore than it already is, nor do i think it is possible to do so. PEople are not forced to visit websites that they find offensive, so it shouldnt matter. There are lots of crazy people in the world, and is it really fair that they be deprived of looking at sites that a huge majority of people may find 'innapropriate'. Making restrictions on the internet is a violation of 1st AMmendment Rights and that is why it wont be done anytime in the future.

No you can't restrict the internet. You would have to shut the down the internet websites server, which is protected overseas. and it would be extremely hard to do it.  Most democratic governments are scared to restrict the internet, "the last frontier" from laws regulating it. while its unfornuate someone died streaming his death online, thats too bad and theres nothing they can do.

I think that the internet should be more monitored. Now a days, the internet is being accessed by a younger generation. The fact that he hung himself on camera in front of a large audience is wrong. But younger kids, especially, shouldn't be exposed to such images. Potentioally, it could cause emotional scarrings for life and possibly convince them that if this is on the internet, then it is ok for them to do.

It may be a violation of the 1st Ammendment, but the internet is not strictly for united states citizens. People of other nations could "try" to put up restrictions on the internet.

I believe that the internet should be more monitered also, but it would be impossible to do that. That would be awful though if a child were to go onto the internet and accidently see this video. I think that that is very disturbing that a person would actualy kill himself and post it online. That seems like something that would happen in a movie not real life that is awful.

Yes I think they should be strict if they are going to just watch a man die right on the internet like it is just a joke; people should be more carefull about what they are watching on the internet expecially if it has something to do with watching a man kill his self on the internet.no

yes, i think the internet should be monitored more strictly when it comes to things like this. Having blogs and everything is completely fine and shoud never be restricted because its freedom of speech. this video of his suicide is also freedom of speech, but it is infringing upon the right of others, therefore he doesn't have a right to do it. i think that justifies monitoring the internet more closely. kids shouldn't be seeing this. no one should.

this just shows that our internet needs to be monitored more strictly. especialy this. this is extremely disturbing and sad. what he did is not right, since as americans we have limited freedom of speech, and he crossed the line when he hurt and disturbed other people, especially his friends. what if a little kid had seen this some how? well no one should have to see this anyways..

I agree with Manny and Jason on this one. You cant moniter the internet, the internet is a tool used around the world and you cant tell the whole world what is and is not allowed on the internet.

The only realistic approach to making this stuff harder to access is forum and chat room moderators doing there job. As for government influence in this matter I believe there should be none. The web is a free resource and if someone wants to post their suicide then it's perfectly fine so long as the people hosting the content consent to it.  Th internet is like anarchy, only difference is there is more personal gain in online anarchy then in real anarchy.

Like what Jason said, the Internet is the "last frontier" and if it is regulated, our 1st Amendment rights could be in jeopardy as it might set a precedent for future censorships. Even if the US tries to regulate the Internet, it would have to make sure every other country in the world would follow their regulation guidelines to ensure that people wont use proxies based in other unregulated countries to access forbidden materials. Also, getting everyone to agree on the guidelines is going to be tough, if not impossible. Not everyone can agree on one thing, like how to fix our economy for example. China has set up a "Great Firewall of China" to regulate the Internet within their borders, yet it failed because people are using proxies based outside of China to bypass this "Great Firewall of China". So REGULATION WILL NOT WORK!!!
