Western State Residency = Happy Life

The "United States of Happy" list just came out...I have to say, I'm hard-pressed to believe that Hawaii is only #2...I certainly think I could manage to be QUITE happy living there!! :)

I have been to hawaii (Twice) and it's a wonderful place just not for most of the residence there. Most ourists don't see that criminal underside but just venture around a city for a bit and you will soon forget your in hawaii. Then you hear the ocean and feel the breeze and your back to your paradise :P

well I could see why Utah is so happy because of the role of the family life there. and Hawaii's great my whole families from there and still lives there, but it seriously gets boring. theres also nothing like being 6 hours behind the East Coast. and you miss so many mainland things you don't even know. Theme Parks, Professional Sports Teams, Mexican food, etc...

I love Hawaii! I went there this past summer and stayed in Oahu on Wiakiki.  Although I didn't like how commercial it is on that side of the island (i call it a family oriented Las Vegas) i really want to stay in Northshore or some place where it isn't so developed.

What's in Wyoming?

you should really go to the big island. That's where i went last and it is by far my favorite place to go. It feels more like the real hawaii and you still got the commercial feel back at the hotel.

Kauai ("the Garden Island") is a great choice for less-developed-more-authentically Hawaiian, especially if you stay away from Princeville and stick to the Kapa'a side.  Beware of chickens, though - they are everywhere (the stories involved are hilarious, too...

i don't think you have to live in hawaii to be happy and live a mellow life. why stop there? why not go to costa rica or bali or java and be a crusty american ex-pat? thats my dream. to be the only white guy for miles and the one with the coolest surfboards. do nothing but eat spicy food, surf and wander through jungles. in hawaii, youre still expected to function in mainstream society. but i guess happiness is in the eye of the beholder.

to be totally honest i would never want to live in any of the top 3 states. i like the more industrialized, commercialized areas. if i lived in any of those places i dont think i would like it too much. orange county is perfect for me. there is the beach, the mountains, and 5 or 6 pro sports teams all within about 2 hours driving distance. what more could you want?

Everywhere you go there will be a criminal underside. The longer you are in any place, the more ugly it becomes.

I totally agree with john here
If i didnt have to work to make a living,  i would live in a small beach town in a diffrent country. Pick up a new language, wake up in the morning and enjoy the waves all day. Ive never been to Hawaii but i heard its beautiful, plus great surf. Im going this July so im totally looking forward to it. What are the best Islands to visit?

Oahu caters to tourist the most, closest thing to a city. Kaua'i is full of beautiful scenery and prideful Hawaiians. I always find Maui boring but usually its because I visit friends and ignore the tourist coast. Big Island is fun seeing all the Volcanos, black sand beaches, etc. but it gets old real quick. Oahu for life!

i think a lot of this has to do with how much communitys have to offer.. obviously if you live in kentucky and your poor and theyre is nothing to do but watch the grass grow.. your going to be unhappy. But if you live in hawaii and the community offers scuba diving and soccer clubs ect.. your going to laugh more and have more fun with the people in your community.

hawaii is beautiful, but i did not think so much number 2. its the only place i have traveled on a plane. when i went two summers ago it was for a soccer tournament with my club team and it was quiet the experiacne, i will never forget it. we were the only non-local team in the tournament so it felt like every team was out to get us. basically to sum it up one team in the semi final game and our team got in a fight, they initiated it, i was involved, really scary. anyways we had to play them for the championship game, cops were there, fans were tailgating. we were definenlty not welcomed. but we won the whole tournament and it was the best feeling ever, the victory was ours.
