Notre Dame officials ask Obama to rethink abortion rights

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) The head of the religious order that founded the University of Notre Dame has asked President Barack Obama to reconsider his support of abortion rights and embryonic stem cell research in the weeks leading up to his speech at the school's May commencement.

Notre Dame's decision to invite Obama has drawn outrage from some Catholics because his stances on abortion and stem cell research are at odds with church teaching.

What are your opinions? Should religion play a role in this? What do you think Obama should do?

ideally people would leave their religious views out of him being able to speak but of course that is only ideally...

Notre Dame invited him to speak, not to change his ideals.  Obama isn't going to do squat, he's doing decent in his approval ratings so far, he doesn't want to polarize the nation over abortion while he's clamoring for support of his budget.

if they do not like his stance on the issue they shouldn't have invited him to speak at their school. It would be ridiculous for obama to completely change his stance on such an important topic just to make some old people on a college school board happy.

I absolutely agree. He got elected, partly, because of his ideals. And for Notre Dame to ASK Obama to rethink something like that, just because THEY don't agree is completely ridiculous.
If you don't agree with him, then you shouldn't have invited him.

Ideally they wouldn't invite someone who doesn't match their teachings to speak. The guy has put me in over 10,000 of federal debt and his approval ratings are still over 50% so he won't do jack. I just wish people would wake up and see that they will not be able to live like they were even after this recession is over. Got to feel bad for the ones graduating also cause higher taxes means a harder time paying off school loans. no

Well, i dont you think that it needs to. No abortion, you woudnt kill the person sitting next to you, why would you do it to your baby?? If he somehow turns his views to being against abortion, it could led to the decline of unwanted pregnancy's because then people could be less inclined to have sex so easily.

But Will you please explain your second half, how would Obama being agaisnt abortion lead to a decline in unwanted pregnancy? Yes mayb people would be less inclined to have sex so easily. But women get raped and condoms break, pills fail...etc....

things happen...in my opinion no woman would evr CHOOSE to be in a situation where she has to have an abortion, but if she is put in that situation...obviouly a difficult one...then i personally believe God is with her in that moment. NO one would choose to terminate their pregnancy and put an end to their baby if a situation wasn't bad, right? BUt thats just me...

As for Obama, I don't think he would change his mind...his ratings are good as of now..I don't think he would shift his views.

The decision shouldn't be a religious choice, but an ethical one. Who's the OG that said killing is bad in the first place? Was is God or man? The preservation of life is a natural common goal that humanity shares, whether it be your own life or the lives of others. IN MY very unbacked OPINION: Government should regulate abortions based on cause. i.e. rape is not a consentual conception and as insensitive as I may sound, a woman should not be forced to carry a child brought to her from such a scarring event in her life. A woman who has an unplanned pregnancy due to recreational sex should not abort a fetus so that she may continue with her life as usual when it was her choice, knowing the possibility of pregnancy, to have sex. But in the end, freedom of choice is what is going to win even with illegalized abortion. There are more brutal and crude ways than visiting a clinic to stop a fetus from growing, and if abortions are not allowed, they will be the new pegnancy preventers. Rather it be done by a doctor than someone not qualified.

<3 Babies and my opinion is always changing so don't be surprised if this comes up again and I say something different.

If Notre Dame invited President Obama in the first place, why did they ask him to change his views?  Is it some kind of ultimatum or something: Change your views about abortion right or we won't let you speak at our school?? I think it depends on what he's speaking about.  If he's going to talk about abortion, then don't invite him! If he's going to talk about other things, don't bring in his abortion views into the equation!  I think President Obama should not change his views and really try to go to the University.  But if they keep turning him away, just leave man.

Personally, I'm against abortion, but I'm also for the woman's right. It's weird; I would never ever get an abortion, but if a woman is okay with knowing she killed potential human life then more power to her.
