Scientist: My quake prediction was ignored

Scientist: My quake prediction was ignored

L'AQUILA, Italy (CNN) -- A researcher says he predicted Monday's devastating earthquake that killed dozens of people and left tens of thousands homeless in central Italy, but authorities dismissed him as a scaremonger.

Gioacchino Giuliani, an employee at a physics institute at Gran Sasso, near the badly-hit city of L'Aquila, has demanded an official apology for what he says was an unforgivable failure to act on his predictions.

"There are people who must apologize to me, and they must have the weight of what occurred on their conscience," Giuliani said after the quake hit, according to local news site Ilcapoluogo.com.

Last month, vans with loudspeakers drove around the area broadcasting Giuliani's warning after he claimed his method of predicting seismic events by radon gas emissions had forecast an imminent quake.

The scientist was reported to police for spreading false alarms and was made to remove his findings from the Internet. "They called me an imbecile," he said.

According IlCapoluogo, Giuliani gave an interview as recently as March 24 in which he repeated his claims.

Local authorities have insisted Monday's 6.3-magnitude event was part of a sequence of tremors in a quake-prone area and neither the size nor the timing was possible to predict.

Giuliani said he was monitoring radon concentrations ahead of Monday's quake, but knew the authorities would press charges against him if he repeated his warning.

"last night I did not know who to talk to. I could see the situation was deteriorating and there was nothing I could do," he said, according to IlCapoluogo.

The  scientist is demanding an apology...do you think he is right to demand an apology or do you think his claims were false?

instead of worrying about his appology he should go and help clean up any damage that the earth quake did, that would be taking the high road

Yea, someone needs to throw the guy a bone. Its just hard because we really dont have any way to predict earthquakes. So believing him is kinda hard. Just make him happy for a second

Well he definitely does deserve an apology. They should have listened to him, there would have been less victims in the eathquake if people knew about it and left. The thing is, because everyone is already so shocked about what has happened, he can't keep demanding people to apologize RIGHT NOW. it's not the right time. but he WAS right, and does deserve an apology. or some kind of acknowledgement that he was right.

I think they should look more into what he was studing and see ifs a probable way of predicting earthquakes, then after thank him for that.

Im sure the Authorities are sorry they didnt listen to him and he Deserves an Apology, but demanding one makes me not like the guy. He seems arogant to me.

One time my mom was at a bridal shower, and the men were golfing outside of the restaurant and my uncle ran into the room and said THERE IS GOING TO BE AN EARTHQUAKE EVERYONE GET DOWN! and of course less than 4 minutes later there was an earthquake. hahahahah! how crazy is that. it was very small but how weird!

It makes me sad that no one listened to him but it makes me even more sad that hes running around with his nose up in the air demanding apologies. Thats not going to make anyone want to listen to him :/

I agree with this.  Demanding an apology isn't appropriate at this time and place. However I'm sure local authorities will give this man more credit next time.

I say he should predict another earthquake and if it comes true, kudos for him.  But he doesn't need an apology, he's acting like a child.

i agree with many of u....demanding an apology just makes the guy not likable...so they didnt listen to him..im sure they are sorry and instead of spending his time demanding an apology..he should just move forward...
