Chavez: Smiles, handshakes don't change view of 'imperialist' U.S.

(CNN) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Friday he appreciated U.S. President Barack Obama's friendly gestures at last weekend's Summit of the Americas, but said they don't change his view of the United States as an imperialist nation.

Hugo Chavez had handshakes and smiles for President Obama at the Summit of the Americas last weekend.

Chavez's fiery diatribes against the United States have included referring to former President George W. Bush as the devil.

He was photographed with Obama at least twice at the summit -- once when Obama shook hands with him and other leaders, and again when he approached Obama to give him a book.

"The hand[shake], yes. And the smile, yes -- one time and a second time and a third time and a fourth time," Chavez said during a televised address. "But nobody should be mistaken. The empire is there, alive and kicking."

The book Chavez presented to Obama as cameras rolled is titled "Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent." The book chronicles Europe's and the United States' role in "the effects and causes of capitalist underdevelopment in Latin America," according to one reviewer.

As he has in the past, Chavez noted Obama's historic role as the first black U.S. president.

"I hope Obama, for the dignity of his race, may be the last president of an imperialist United States," he said.

Do you think Chavez will ever change his views of America as time goes on?

unfornuately morons around the world don't realize the President isn't the supreme only leader in the USA. The Congress wouldn't bow down to this tool. maybe a douchebag like Sean Penn and Danny Glover and Naomi Campbell would, but most Americans realize this guy is a tyrant in the making.

wanting to make peace doesnt mean you are bowing down. and even if you were, that is just your ego getting in the way of more important matters

I'm sorry but sometimes you just don't make sense. A leader of another country denounces us and you say trying to make peace with them is a noble project. Why don't you apply your own mentality to government? If people talk crap on you then you don't care you just don't talk to them. Do you see a difference in this situation cause it just sounds like the same high school jealous teen trying to down on the power and strength of the U.S. Ego is a problem when you allow it to get in the way of reason and in this case the man hates us and yet he is dependent on us to finance his country. He is the one with the ego trip not the U.S.

You dont need to apologize, just because you didnt understand what i said doesnt mean it doesnt make sense. maybe it doesnt make sense from your perspective but you should well have learned by now that you and i dont see eye to eye on a lot of things.

Ego is a problem (period). there is not one instance in which i can think of where ego has benefited anyone at anytime. He thinks the US is an imperialistic nation. okay, he kinda has a point. we try to control a lot of the politics in the middle east for oil. and that is only one example. and yes he has an ego problem too.

I think from what the article said, we are making baby steps of progress in venezuela. he appreciates that friendly gesture but he still thinks we are a very over controlling nation and frankly, i agree with him.

do you see more of what im saying chris.

I agree that government should not have it's hands in so many pots but I do not agree with peacewith a mad man. That is my point.

Really? you think he is crazy? i think he was probably emotionally deprived as a child and now he has to try and prove himself to the world but im sure he is a fairly normal person in social situations. a little power hungry but i would describe 99% of humans being the same way.

You have not seen his background but you do know of his actions and that is how you judge a person. Their thoughts are one thing but to do the right thing is another. He is stone cold freaking crazy.

on a random note, one thing i have learned about this class is that i never want to share my opinions and views on current issues with people unless it is absolutely necessary which i dont see why it would be. what did i tell you in the library chris? be the mountain in a wind storm or something like that. im going to just remain silent and calm while all of this political mumbo jumbo just swirls like chaos.

i plan on just focussing on being a happy person and letting my happiness rub off on people as much as possible. and all of this back and forth arguing doesn't make me happy and i think (no offense to anyone) that all of this arguing and debating about issues is for people who are trying to feel important and influence power in the world and once this class is over, i want no part of it. if you want to debate ideas with me i would love to hear anyone's ideas on happiness, because thats something worth talking about.
