Nothin' but a Dogg in me

SANTA MONICAA man is suing rapper and pop culture icon Snoop Dogg for $22 million in a case that is now in trial at the Santa Monica courthouse.  Richard Monroe, Jr.,  claims that Snoop, whose legal name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus, as well as members of his entourage, physically assaulted him at a concert that took place at the White River Amphitheatre in  Auburn,WA, in 2005.

A videotape of the alleged incident was played for jurors in court on Friday. Broadus's attorneys claim that the video does not display the rapper hitting Monroe in the back of the head like the plaintiff claims and, if anything, the video shows that Broadus should not be held responsible for paying any of the damages.

Broaduss attorneys also claim that the defendant thought he was being attacked when Monroe, who is 6' 3'' and weighs approximately 300 pounds, jumped on stage. They also believe that Monroe's injuries and account of the incident are exaggerated as well as inconsistent.

Monroe has a different story. He claims that he jumped on stage because he believed that he was asked to come up and that he did not have any intentions of hurting the rapper in any way. He claims that more than anything, he was just excited to be on stage because he was a fan of the rapper.

Canyon News spoke to Brian E. Watkins, Monroe's attorney, about the incident. "It started when Mr. Monroe believed he received an open invite from one of the artists," said Watkins. "However, we now believe that the artists may have been referring to some girls in the audience."

When Canyon News asked about the other rappers originally named in the lawsuit, including "The Game" and "Kurupt & Daz," Watkins explained to us that those situations were handled out of court.

Canyon News also asked if Monroe had tried to place legal charges against Broadus. "Kings County Sheriffs investigated the incident, but they were stonewalled by Calvin Broadus' attorneys," said Watkins.

Broadus is likely to testify at some point in the trial which is expected to last a week.

Representatives for Broadus, including Kayla Isenberg and Hayes Michel, have not returned calls to Canyon News at this time.

Broadus is famous for acting in films such as Soul Plane and Starsky & Hutch. He is most famous musically for his 1993 album, Doggystyle.

Q: Is Snoop D-O double G responsible for Broadus' injuries?
