Obama: Some Guantanamo Prisoners will go to the US

-President Barack Obama said on Thursday some terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo would be sent to U.S. prisons despite strong congressional opposition.

-Obama had vowed in his first days in office to close the detention center within a year as part of his effort to repair America's tarnished image abroad.

-Seeking to calm fears that some detainees could eventually be released on U.S. soil, Obama insisted he would not authorize freeing anyone who would "endanger the American people".

-But he said some terrorism suspects would be tried in U.S. courts and would be held in super-maximum-security U.S. prisons while others could be tried by military commissions or transferred to other countries.

-An unreleased Pentagon report concludes that one in seven of the 534 prisoners already transferred abroad from Guantanamo has returned to terrorism or militant activity

-Illustrating the problems Obama faces on the Guantanamo issue, fellow Democrats in the Senate rebelled against him and voted down his $80 million funding request on Wednesday after Republicans threatened to brand them as soft on terrorism.

-While most Democrats agree Guantanamo should be closed, they are demanding a detailed plan before approving funds to launch the process.

Do you think Guantanamo should be closed or stay open?  Do you think the US should house these terrorists, the ones who other countries will not take. Do you think Obama is taking too much of an idealist/judicial approach to the reality he is now facing?  Would you be angry if *hypothetically* you're a Colorado citizen and now terrorist suspects might be tried and sentenced there? And as a US citizen would you be concerned if some of the terrorists are relased in the USA?

I watched hannity last night and although I don't like most the show the panel he has at the end always has a good debate. Last night they talked about this and Geraldo from Geraldo at large got destroyed in defending the closing of the prison and the use of enhanced tactics. By the end he was just saying that anymore info released would just open up a huge can of worms but I think Obama opened the can when he said he was going to close it.

I think it will be safe, they will obviously be on very close watch, but its so much money to close it down, money that we honestly dont have.. all for what..? to better our reputation a little. We Will always have other countries that hate the good old US of A no matter what.

They're putting a rancor at every corner of the prison, and I doubt any of the inmates have any Jedi in them.

It is scary to think of what would happen if we close Guantanamo Bay and try to find another place to put the prisoners.  I kind of want them to close it, but then what's going to be the difference if they open another prison somewhere else?  I'd say they put the prisoners in some facility in the middle of some vast desert or somewhere in Greenland.  And if I were a Colorado citizen I'd want the places where prisoners are tried and sentenced to be as far from where I live as possible.

I still don't get the point in closing it. They stopped water boarding and it's not breaking any international law.

it seems like it would be okay to just add a couple more prisoners
