DNA for Freedom - A Good Deal?

Orange County has been quietly (at least, until it ended up in the newspaper) implementing a policy, unique in the nation, under which individuals arrested on suspicion of committing a crime can have the charges against them dropped if they agree to provide a DNA sample to the county.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-oc-dna17-2009sep17,0,7594003.story?track=rss

(it's really worth reading the whole article - there are LOTS of different issues raised)

Is this program a good idea?  Does it violate the civil rights of citizens?  Is it relevant that the program is voluntary and/or that there is a fee to the arrested individual for performing the test and/or that the DNA is stored at what is considered to be a "rogue" lab?  Is this the wave of the future?

i think you forfeit a lot of your rights when you break the law and i think giving up your DNA should be a right you surrender. criminals should still be charged them with their crime. obviously many people would trade their DNA for freedom so that means criminals will be set free just because they gave police a hair? this doesnt make sense to me.

I agree. criminals are criminals and if they are in prison, they should stay in prison for how ever long they were intended to stay. if you cant do the time don't do the crime. its as simple as that. who is to say that as soon as they get out, they wont cause any problems and as soon as they are arrested, they just give their DNA again? this makes no sense, and why DNA, why not something else? there must be a reason as to why they want the DNA. this is actually an awful idea! people who break the law should be punished and there should be NO EXCEPTIONS WHAT SO EVER FOR ANYONE, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE.

I absolutely do not think criminals should be let loose just because they provide DNA. This is a stupid "get out of free card". Sure the DNA could help them catch a repeating criminal in a future crime, but why not prevent that crime from never happening in the future by NOT LETTING THE CRIMINAL OFF FREE IN THE FIRST PLACE? I just think that the idea is a bad one all together.

criminals should not be able to get out of jail just for providing their dna. this could lead to more crimal activity when the criminals know that they dont even have to go to jail for the crime the comitted, all they have to do is donate some dna and there off the hook. These criminals need to go and stay in jail

I don't really understand the logic behind this policy. I suppose criminals providing DNA for future offenses is a good thing, but why not just take their DNA when arrested and still make them serve their sentences?

i think this is a horrible idea. this would increase the crime rate because its easy for delinquents to give a piece of hair and not hav to serve jail time or pay bail. this will increase the number of criminals in our cities and who knows what the government really wants to do with that DNA if they are willing to set criminals free for it...

DNA for getting out of jail? C'mon the criminal should not even have that option. Why would the government want our DNA? The criminal should do the time for what he/she had done.
