Authorities in Venezuela say they will punish TV stations if they continue to broadcast episodes of cult US animation Family Guy.

CARACAS, Venezuela Venezuelan authorities plan to impose fines on cable television companies that refuse to stop airing the animated television series "Family Guy."

Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami says the program should be pulled from the airwaves because it promotes the use of marijuana.

El Aissami was outraged by a recent episode in which the show's characters started a campaign to legalize marijuana.

He said Thursday that cable networks that broadcast "Family Guy" would be fined by Venezuela's telecommunications regulator if they refuse to dump the program.

The government of President Hugo Chavez is preparing to impose new regulations on cable television. Among other rules, cable providers could be forced to carry Chavez's frequent speeches.

-------> Question:

 Is the show "Family Guy" a bad show that promotes the use of Mary Jane(Marijuana)?

Is this another example  Hugo Chavez's power as a dictator? (which he denies)

Do you disagree with the President's title as a "dictator"?

Awwww well thats no fun.....no I LOVE Family Guy! I watch Family Guy, but you dont see me starting a campaign for marijuana legalization. Sure, Its a little inappropriate at times, but that shouldn't result in its being BANNED from TV! Parents and viewers should have discretion while watching enough, and should be wise enough to decide whether the images in Family Guy will poorly influence themselves or their family or not. I think this is just sad, because for most people, Family Guy is a simply hilarious source of entertainment.

Unfortunately, with totalitarian governments, this kind of thing can happen. Does it show marijuana in some episodes? Sure. Is it really PROMOTING it? Not really.

This is absolutely another example of Chavez's dictatorial power. And he certainly is a "dictator", by all accounts.

Obviously I don't think the government should advocate pot use, but it's illegal in America and we still allow Family Guy to air.  I do think this is just another way Hugo Chavez can display his communist ways and seem like he has great control of his country.  In reality, Chavez is a dictator.  There are plenty of crimes committed on television shows, but people should still have the right to watch what they please, and the personal responsibility to not commit crimes they see on TV.

I dont think I have ever seen an episode where they have promoted Marijuana. I have seen an episode where they use it, but I havent seen one where they promote it in a good way. We have movies where people do Marijuana and movies where people drink, and smoke, and have sex. We have shows and books that have the same thing. To ban something that has that as part of the show, is illogical.

this isn't much different than South Park being banned in Russia. Yeah, they are both inappropriate most of the time, but banning is pretty harsh, considering they're both great shows (IMO). Since in Venezuela, Family guy IS on cable network (unlike ours in the US), it should be ok.

Banning Family Guy c'mon... its a great show and shouldn't be banned because of a guy who feels its inappropriate in that particular country.
