And the ugliest people are...

LONDON (Reuters) Britons are among the ugliest people in the world, according to a dating website that says it only allows "beautiful people" to join.

Fewer than one in eight British men and just three in 20 women who have applied to BeautifulPeople.com have been accepted, an emailed statement from the website showed.

Existing members of the "elite dating site" rate how attractive potential members are over a 48 hour period, after applicants upload a recent photo and personal profile.

Swedish men have proved the most successful, with 65 percent being accepted, while Norwegian women are considered the most beautiful with 76 percent accepted, the website said.

The way that BeautifulPeople.com accepts new members is simple. A potential member applies with a photo and a brief profile. Over 48 hours, existing members of the opposite sex vote whether or not to admit them, the site said.

Options are: "Yes definitely," "Hmm yes, O.K," "Hmm no, not really" and "No definitely not."

The site was founded in 2002 in Denmark and went live across the globe last month. Since then, the site has rejected nearly 1.8 million people from 190 countries, admitting just 360,000 new members.

"I would say Britain is stumbling because they don't spend as much time polishing up their appearance and they are letting themselves down on physical fitness," Beautiful People managing director Greg Hodge said. "Next to Brazilian and Scandinavian beauties, British people just aren't as toned or glamorous."

Only the male Russian and Polish applicants fared worse than British men, although Russian women had a 44 percent acceptance rate. Polish women did not appear in the table.

German applicants were slated for offering up unflattering photographs, which may have hindered their acceptance rates at 15 percent for men and 13 percent for women, the lowest rate in their category.

"German men and women aren't faring well, but they are submitting stern images, they need to soften up," Hodge said.

Is this website discriminatory??? Is it fair for others to choose whether others should be admitted based on their own personal opinions?

It is the person's choice to participate in this website and they are warned before hand that they will be judged on their looks and that will decide if they are allowed to join. I find it funny, and I really want to know what "beautiful" means to the people making the choice to allow these people to enter or not. It just shows how shallow people are because they are too focused on what is on the outside rather than the inside. I think this website will just make peoples' egos larger.

I think that website is stupid. Theres good looking and bad looking. But what does it matter anyway? People are people and to care about material things like this are such a waste of time.

hahahahah sorry but this article made me laugh
well, yea you could say its discriminatory, but its your choice if u want to join or not, so u should know what your getting into.
and they must have a very narrow idea of what beauty is, what i think is beautiful may be completely different from somebody elses point of view. so yea i think this website is pretty dumb haha

I think it is their fault for joining, but to start a website judging people is completely and morally wrong. Who want's to spend their time on a website judging people? Get a life, seriously.

Nahh this isnt discriminatory because they arent allowing them in just because theyre British, theyre not allowing them in because they arent attractive, and it just so happens there are more unattractive British people applying. They run the risk of being rejected by appyling anyway, which is their CHOICE of being judged.

i don't think its discriminatory because it is the persons choice to join or not, and they do face the chance of getting rejected. but i think its producing bad stereotypes that shoudn't have to be there.

Talk about shallow... sheesh. While this IS without a doubt discriminatory, it's not a big deal because the people are openly allowing themselves to be judged. It's like American Idol: the bad singers (or in this case, the ugly people) are let go, while the good singers (good looking people) are allowed to stay. As long as they have a disclaimer/terms of service page, I don't see the problem here.

I think the website's a pretty stupid idea anyway, but the people that are attempting to join are voluntarily subjecting themselves to be judged on their looks. So no, I don't find it to be discriminatory.
