Lawyer for Americans held in Haiti quits

A Haitian attorney, Coq, representing 10 Americans charged with kidnapping for trying to take 33 children out of Haiti has resigned.

The 10 missionaries were charged with kidnapping children on Thursday, as well as criminal association.

The Americans were turned back a week ago as they tried to cross the border into the Dominican Republic without proper documentation for the 33 children. They claimed they were going to house the children in a converted hotel in that country and later move them to an orphanage they were building there.

Coq said that Silsby, the group's leader, had no intention of doing any harm.

"Some parents in a village outside Port-au-Prince said they had willingly given their children to the Americans, who promised them a better life. The parents also said they were told they could see their children whenever they wanted.(CNN)"

It is still unclear as to why exactly Coq has quit his representation of the American missionaries.

DISCUSSION QUESTION: What could the American missionaries have done to prevent this situation if they were truly there to put the Haitian children in better care.

They could've done one of those tv things where a famous lady goes up to a kid picks them up and says "for only $18 dollars a month you can help this child."

well if they were going to build an orphanage anyway they could have built it in haiti somewhere. yes its striken from the horrible earth quake but not all of it was completely affected so it could have just been moved to another city. Also they should have got legal custody documents signed by the parents, identification, and passports for the kids as well if they really wanted to leave the country without problems.
