NJ Historical Society Sells Map to Raise Funds

NJ Historical Society has become another victim of the recession.  To raise much-needed funds, they sold the The Abel Buell map, which was worth approximately 2.1 million dollars.  People are outraged, saying it was too important an article for them to sacrifice.

Does a museum have an ethical obligation to retain its collections?  Or is selling it "for the greater good"? (Dumbledore reference intended.)

Well, everybody is cutting corners and stuff, some things need to change, even if it's undesireable...

i don't know. This is a hard thing to decide. What criteria would decide the important to the less important pieces?

"The historical society board determined the items to be auctioned are not critical to the evolving mission of the society, which will focus more on educational and research and library services and less on producing 'large scale museum exhibitions.'"

The problem is some people say that the map fits that category.

This is really sad. It just shows how everyone has fallen on hard times these days. I would hope that the museum would do everything they possibly could to save all of their collections. That's the entire point of a museum.

I'm pretty sure this will somehow show back up for public viewing eventually.

I think it's sad that countries even have to resort to selling museum artifacts. Countries should be helping each others economies and preventing our history from being sold.

I agree.  I think it's really sad to hear that they museum can't keep this because they need money.  Even if they "determined [that] the items to be auctioned are not critical to the evolving mission of the society, which will focus more on educational and research and library services and less on producing 'large scale museum exhibitions," they still had that map there for a reason;  It is a piece of history.
