Microsoft unveils Xbox One next-generation console

Microsoft has unveiled the Xbox One - its next-generation games console.

The firm unveiled the machine along with a new Kinect camera sensor and game pad at its US headquarters.

It described the voice and gesture-controlled machine as an "all-in-one" system offering games, live TV, movies and music.

The firm's Entertainment and Devices Division accounted for $9.6bn (£6.3bn) worth of sales in Microsoft's last financial year.

That only represented about 13% of its total revenue for the period - but one analyst said the importance of this launch should not be underestimated.

"Microsoft is very strong in business software and the enterprise cloud business, but its consumer businesses are facing tremendous challenges: PCs are declining rapidly and Windows Phone handsets have only a fraction of the market shares of rivals," said Jia Wu from consultants Strategy Analytics.

"Xbox represents Microsoft's core strategy in the consumer entertainment market, especially after it sold its Mediaroom video distribution business to Ericsson earlier this year.

"This is also the unique asset which Microsoft has that can differentiate itself from Apple, Google and several of the other large tech companies. "

Can't we wait a few years until the new consoles? They're rushing the next generation in way too fast; developers are going to lose money just trying to keep up with the technology.

I mean, look at how brilliantly well the Wii U is faring. Maybe they won't be as clunky, but this isn't the market for a new console generation.

 Well the Wii U did so terribly because, well...its a Wii. Its not as appealing with its bad graphics and kiddie nature. And its been like 8 years since the xbox 360 came out...so I'm not really sure what you mean by "too soon". do explain :)

I voted for Xbox one based on the fact that that is what I have and what I feel more comfortable with.

xbox is so terrible that no matter what they do i will never like it ps4 all the way

I dont need to be bombarded with sports games and movie trailers all over the main screen. Just give me a controller and a console and ill be fine. If i want to watch sports ill turn on the tv.

The problem with the Wii U being too "kiddy" is that the Wii was the best-selling console of its generation. Wider appeal and all that. That the Wii U is failing speaks of a bigger issue than any perceived lack of maturity.
