Funeral Services Instead of Graduation Marches in OC - Are You Safe Enough?!

In an absolute tragedy, as you have probably heard, five local students were killed on Monday in a car crash that split their vehicle in half.  Two were seniors, two juniors, and one sophomore.  Two were sisters.

Speed is presumed to have been a contributing factor to the magnitude of the accident

http://www.scpr.org/news/2013/05/28/37446/5-irvine-teens-killed-in-fiery-newport-beach-car-c/

Excerpt: Newport Beach police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe says the Infiniti sedan they were in veered off a road Monday evening and hit a tree. The vehicle split in half and caught fire. Lowe says four people were ejected from the car and died immediately. A fifth was partially ejected and was later declared dead at a hospital. The cause of the crash wasnt immediately clear. No other vehicles were involved.

How often do you/do your friends drive in a manner that's unsafe?  Are we doing enough to warn teens about the dangers of not just drunk driving, but reckless driving?

People speed all the time assuming that nothing will ever happen to them as a result of it. I also think we need to do more to inform teens of the dangers of reckless driving.

Well I know I never text and drive, neither do my friends. Ive noticed more adults texting to be honest. Also i think teens are pretty careful because they dont want to wreck a car their parents bought them haha.

I have a friend who was recently in a car accident because she was texting. Luckily it was small and no one was hurt. I never text and drive and this motivated me even more not to!

Everyone is always blaming teens for reckless driving. I do not text & drive, I do not drink, and I do not speed over 10 miles above the speed limit. Some of us are not the problem. So no, I do not believe that teenagers should be punished more for others' problems. This was an unfortunate accident, and my heart goes out to the families of the ones lost.

To answer the question, It depends on what defines safe driving? if you say that it is not putting other peoples lives on the line well i would agree but the fact is we are driving Massive machines that even at the speed limit have the potential to kill. yes i drive fast, why? because 1- i LOVE driving 2- because i am 100% confident in my abilities to handle my car. I will never purposely put other people at risk. But back to the article, to split your car in half you would have to be traveling at tremendous speed my guess well over 80 and most likely over 100 since the car they were driving has pretty good handling. And the road they were driving on i have driven many many times and even for me i would never ever go more than 60 on it. so just a lack of judgement on the drivers part. It truly is sad and I pray for the families of the ones lost.

I agree, not to spit on the driver's grave but, he definitely knew what he was doing, driving without a license or permit and flying down the road at over 100 miles an hour is never a smart decision and with a loaded car?! His stupidity killed him and all his friends it's sad but there's no way he didn't know the costs of what could happen...probably distracted having too much fun with friends not paying attention to the road and now everyone is dead...

This is an unusually harsh post from you :).  I understand your frustration with being stereotyped into a larger group, but concerns about teen reckless driving are statistically validated (see below).  And the question wasn't about punishment, it was about warning.  Do you think an increased awareness campaign aimed at saving lives would constitute an "increased punishment for others' problems"?

Per a 2010 study, "Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for America's teenagers, accounting for more than a third of fatalities in this age group every year, the CDC says in a new report. The CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) says that 48% of deaths in youngsters 12 to 19 are caused by unintentional injuries. Of these injuries, 73% are caused by motor vehicle accidents."

From another article: Over the past five years, young male drivers have contributed dramatically more to the level of injury and damage from reckless driving New York than any other group. Web Crash offers data that shows age-groups 17-20, 21-24 and 25-29 have substantially higher involvement in reckless driving and accidents than any 30 years and over.

Yeah i believe we teens are reckless drivers and we all belong in the same category, I'll admit I speed and i occasionally send a text and I do a lot of dumb things but my driving skills are pretty good so i do not condone doing what I do at all, it's just a bad habit that probably won't break but I do not do many of those things very often anyway

I think teens drive Idiotically sometimes, i know i have. Its partly because we try to impress to much also driving takes absolute concentration and most of us just aren't ready for it. That being said i think the DMV tests should be harder and actually make People learn to drive. The tests are way to easy!!! if you didn't pass i apologize but its not that the test was too hard its that your not ready. We need to fix that. it will save lives.

Oh, I am so sorry! I did not mean to sound harsh(: I was just saying. Although I do know that statistically we are a more at-risk age group, some teens do not fall into that category. I sincerely apologize if I sounded mean! <3

One of my distant cousins just got into a car crash a few days ago and even though I do not know him very well I feel the pain simply because he is my age. Everytime something like this happens it makes us more aware that our lives are precious and we should cherish them and those of our loved ones.
