I've enjoyed and agreed with Gloria Romero's columns, even though she was a Democratic state senator. But I must part ways on her column, "March to desegregate school goes on" [Opinion, Sept. 3] about the inequality of funds to minority schools.
You can pump all the money in the world into these schoold, but until parents are held accountable, it will be a waste.
How many of these minority students come from a two-parent home, and how many come from a home where English is the primary language? When these parents start taking responsibility for success or failure of their kids, things will change.
Schools were not meant to provide free babysitters. They are there for preparing students for life on the outside. THey can't do it alone.

This topic reminded me about what Mrs. Cav said about communities that have free sports programs to keep kids out of gangs, jail, and etc. This addresses the topic of border control, school transfer regulations, school funding, and where our priorities are. It's interesting to consider that it's easy for kids to transfer from school to school in order to "seek a better education" under the No Child Left Behind Act, yet we don't then push them to strive for excellence, if they're there to just be watched, that's "okay". But is it really?
