    2) East Timor: Ex-Rebel Leader Is Named President

  • Taur Matan Ruak, a former guerrilla fighter, was named the nation's new president on Monday.
  • He was an Ex-rebel Army officer who ran for office and won April 16th's election.
  • Rauk won with a 61.2% lead, says the chief justice.
  • He was scheduled to take office in May.

wait... he became the president of the very government he was fighting against? I wonder how he had gotten his way into a postition to even try to become president in the first place and secondly I wonder how he will help as the new president?

His coming into office could result in major changes in government. It also shows evidence that he did have plenty support as a guerilla fighter prior to running for president.

Maybe he sees something that most people (who liked the way of things) didn't see that could potentially make things worse down the road

I hope the ex-rebel leader will help his country and make any improvements if necessary. Maybe he realized that he could help his country better as president than a guerilla rebel fighter.

Instead of revising the goverment through violence, he took the opportunity to revise the goverment by taking a political position. Only time will tell us what his intentions truly are.
