Advocating Driving Women Drives You To Prison?

This is a stark reminder that life in other places is a lot less free than life here

http://www.chron.com/news/crime/article/Saudi-writer-who-opposed-ban-on-women-driving-held-4938098.php

A reporter who wrote a column arguing in favor of lifting the Saudi ban on women driving has been detained indefinitely.  Friends were called at one point and told they could come pick him up, and when they arrived they, too, were detained and questioned.

Saudi Arabia: our partners in oil.  Our president has held hands with their Crown Prince (it's a sign of respect in their culture).  Should we be so involved economically and politically with a country that doesn't allow women to drive or travel without a man's permission, bans red in advance of Valentine's Day (http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/02/12/saudi.valentine/), prohibits pork, and bans the public practice of any religion other than Islam (other local laws, per the British Embassy, can be found at https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/saudi-arabia/local-laws-and-customs, and this article from the Taipei Times delineates the results of a UN investigation into discrimination in Saudi Arabia http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/world/archives/2008/02/03/2003400077)?

The women in Middle Eastern countries should be granted basic freedom and rights. Then when they have those rights, it will be easier to advocate for additional rights, like being allowed to drive.

I think this is outrageous, I mean women should be treated as equals and have the same rights and opportunities everywhere...I'm really happy that Malala has been getting so much presence in our media because I think it's inspiring women in those countries to stand up for themselves and what rights they deserve.

It is hard because both countries have different customes for the cultures. I think women should have basic freedoms in that country, luckily women are starting to stand up for their rights and if the U.S. can help the women gets more rights, that would be awesome!

I don't understand why men there marry women and make them have their child yet won't allow them to be themselves. The ban should be thrown out

It is very hard to decide whether or not we should not allign with a country which does not hold the same values as our own. In this case I believe the alliance is neccessary, unfortunately. While it would be awesome to only trade and be partners with nations which give its citizens the same rights we enjoy, it is not a reasonale requirement. Many countries are very backwards in their thinking and less free than our own. While this driving ban is awful, I don't think it has anything to do with our oil partnership with Saudi Arabia.

i obviously wish everybody in the world could have basic rights, but it is also their culture. women in those cultures have always been below men, but times do change. it changed in our culture and i hope it can change in theirs. but leave their culture out of international politics.

It's really strange that here we take driving as a basic freedom when in other countries women are suppressed from doing so. We are so lucky to live here.

Even though the driving ban is really bad, I think the US should remain allies with Saudi Arabia. The possibility of them reforming their country is much higher if we remain allies with them than if we abandon them and leave them alone with all the Middle Eastern countries who hate the US and equal rights.
