Uruguay opposition demands marijuana referendum

A conservative opposition MP in Uruguay has demanded a referendum to repeal a law legalising the sale and consumption of marijuana if it is passed by Senate on Tuesday. Geraldo Amarillo, of the National Party, has stated that he wants to let the people decide on this matter and not the senate. How do you guys feel about the sales and distribution of marijuana?

Legalizing the sale and distribution of marijuana would render many cartels useless and illogical. I don't see what is so bad about te legalization of mj when tobacco is still legal

I feel like the people should decide, but i dont see anything wrong with the legalization of marijuana as long it is regulated and not abused

I think legalizing marijuana would end drug cartels and increase revenue for the country. If it were legal to sell, it could be taxed like any other good. Also, I feel that the public should decide on this issue, not the senate. The government is a representation of the people and if the people want something, they should be able to have it.

It's the people who have to live with the decision, they should be the ones who vote for the topic.

There's no reason they can't tax. It might actually help their revenue.

There are many possible outcomes to making it legal and taxing it. yes, drug cartels may diminish but I don't think it'll make them disappear, unless they plan on making cocaine and other illegal substances legal too. Though if they do make marijuana legal I definitely think they should tax just because it could help their economy and possibly sway people away from it or possible cause them to buy less if they don't have the adequate funds.

I think it's a good idea that they're considering letting the citizens vote on the matter especially since it gives them choice. It may even increase the revenue that they would have probably spent on trying to manage crimes related to marijuana.

it would be a good idea to let the people vote whether or not marijuana should be legalized or not and if it is legalized, those against don't have to buy it.

making it legal is good move to make, because it can be taxed and there won't me as much as a demand for cartels which will bring less problems to the country as a whole.

I believe if this is legalized it will result in more problems in a already hectic country.
