Because so often contemporary world affairs involve food in some fashion - it's affordability/availability/consumption/cultural connection, a tradition developed a few years back of having a "CWA Cookoff" - wherein people (individually or in partnership with others) bring in dishes to share and then sample each others' cuisine.
In some semesters, there has also been a competitive element, with prizes conferred in categories like Best Snack, Best Sweet Treat, Best Healthy Option, Best Presentation, etc.
