Tourist distracted by Facebook plunges off pier in Australia

A tourist in Australia had to be rescued by police after plunging off a pier while browsing Facebook on her phone. Is social media taking over our minds and not letting us see what is right in front of us? I see students and adults all the time looking down on their phone not looking at the things that are surrounding them. Is social media taking over our lives? And if the problem is this bad now, what will it be like in 10 years?

This story truly depicts how much society is consumed by social media. Because social media is so accessible through our phones, we tend to become easily distracted and lack focus. Social media has also drastically increased cell phone use and I don't see this trend going down anytime soon.

I think that social media is taking over. I was in the movie theaters a couple days ago in one of the back rows and before the movie started I looked down and saw everyone on their phone and no one was talking to each other! Social gatherings are now all about escaping to the cyber world of facebook or instagram. I really like smartphones as a tool and think they are an amazing piece of technology, but they are also taking away personal connections. Not only are people not talking to each other but they are also not experiencing real life as it happens because they are stuck on facebook.

That is seriously stupid!! >.> I don't think that social media is taking over our lives I just think it is the individual that has the issues with paying attention and staying off their phones. People need to stop.

I think people just get too into their phone and what is happening on facebook, instagram, twitter etc and people have to look at their phones all the time. Otherwise they feel disconnected from the outside world. The entire accident could have not happened if she simply pulled off to the side of the road or just waited until she got to her destination to check facebook.
