Fergalicious: Uruguay to allow pot users to buy up to 20 joints a week

Uruguayans will be able buy up to 10 grams of pot a week, enough to roll 20 joints, under new rules governing the recently legalized marijuana trade in the country. Uruguay, the first country to legalize the growing and sale of marijuana, is being closely watched by other countries debating drug liberalization. Cannabis consumers will have to register with the government on a confidential list before making purchases from authorized pharmacies. These pharmacies can only be supplied by private growers authorized by the government, which will oversee quality and choose varieties. Individuals will also be able to grow up to six plants for personal use. Uruguay has said it is also considering having marijuana grown on a plot of land controlled by the military to avoid illegal trafficking of the crop.

How would you feel if this happened in the United States? What do you think the effects would be? Do you think this would help end illegal trafficking of the drug? How do you think other countries who are debating the legalization of marijuana view Uruguay? Do you think Uruguay made a good decision in legalizing cannabis?

Legalization of the drug will give the government the opportunity to moderate the drug and minimize the buying and selling of it illegally.

I do think that legalizing marijuana is not a bad idea because if alcohol is legal, why not marijuana? This would definitely lead to a a huge decrease in the illegal drug trafficking of the drug because you technically wouldn't be illegally trafficking the drug if its legal in the U.S. I do think this was a good decision made by Uruguay.

I think that legalizing it in America would be bad because it would portray a bad look on the country nd alot of bad things would happen because of peoples stupid decisions because they are high. This might be a good decision for Uruguay but not for America.

If this actually happened in the US, everyone will have access to buy and use pot. Therefore, making 100% of the American population to be potheads.

I also think legalizing it in America wouldn't lead to anything good, and drug dealers would just start dealing worse drugs more often

If marijuana was legalized in California far less people would be arrested and illegal trafficking would go down. I think we should wait and see how it works for Uruguay but i dont think it was a bad idea.

I feel if we legalized it in America nothing good would come from it, and there would be more stupid people going out and buying it and getting arrested from their actions from it

I don't have a real preference on whether marijuana should be legal or not.. I really don't care because it doesn't affect me directly and either way people are going to do it. But what I have never understood is why marijuana is illegal and alcohol is legal. As far as I am concerned they do about the same thing; alter your ability to do particular things and affect your thinking and decision making. If anything I feel people make worse decisions and are more impaired when they're drunk so it doesn't exactly make sense to me. I feel is marijuana was legal a lot more people would do it, but I also feel plenty of people already do it so it's hard to really determine whether it should be legal or not.

I don't think we should legalize this because I don't think there are more pros than cons in this decision.

I think that legalization is a great idea. It provides tax revenue and allows for greater regulation. It also prevents the cartels from having such a big market here in the US. If its legal why go to a drug dealer and buy it illegally. Weed is definitely less harmful than tobacco or alcohol why do we demonize it and not tobacco or alcohol...

I don't think we should legalize it because it will just encourage the use of the drug.

I think that there are to many negative affects to the legalization of the drug, and should only be allowed to be proscribed by a medical doctor if needed.

Legalizing the drug will open up many economic pro's and I think crime rates will go down. "$40 million: The amount of marijuana tax revenue Colorado is devoting to public school construction."

I personally don't mind if they legalize the drug or not because people are still going to find a way to get it. I think they should just legalize it and be done with it.
