"Report slams child labor in tobacco fields" ------ Super Six + 1

There is not an exact figure for how many children work in America's tobacco fields, but Human Rights Watch interviewed nearly 150 for a new report on the dangers these workers face.  Many of the children that work on these fields suffer the effects of nicotine exposure as they labor in U.S. tobacco fields.  Children can legally work in the tobacco fields, and some as young as 11 and 12 years old do.

Should children be allowed to work in tobacco fields?  How can this be fixed?  Do you think that this is right?

It depends if they are being forced to work or not, I do not think children at age 11 would be choosing to work so I do not believe it is right.

Children should not be allowed to work in tobacco fields. Tibacco is bad for their health and child labor is not good, they should be going to school.

I think it is absolutely wrong to have children working in the tobacco fields. If they are not 18 they should not be allowed to work without consent.

I agree with Garrett if they have to work to provide for their families, I think they should be allowed to work. If it is being forced upon them it is definitely wrong. It is a health concern and they should be learning not doing labor.

Children under 16 should not be working, especially on tobacco fields. There should a regulation preventing child labor especially under such unhealthy environment.

Children shouldn't be working especially in the US. In all honesty though sometimes children have to work or else they may get forced into prostitution rings or drug rings. Yeah its sad but look at the alternatives.

Children that young should not be allowed to work in tobacco fields because it poses as a threat to their health. To prevent this from happening the government should set an age limit like 18 to be able to work in tobacco fields.

I really don't think they should be able to work at these plantations. They are probably forced to do the work by relatives whether they admit or not. They are too young to work at an environment that could harm themselves.

I do not think that children should be working in the tobacco fields. It is a huge risk to their health and could have long-term effects on it as well.

Unfortunately I feel as though no matter how hard we try, child labor will always be an issue. People simply care about profit. Obviously I do not condone child labor and I emphasize with these poor children being treated as slaves.

I believe that this should be the decision of the children and their respective families. However, I do feel their work should be the least severe by far and the consent of the children must truly be considered in such a choice

Children should not be working at age 11 or 12 at all, especially in a tobacco field. This should be illegal as it is harmful to their health and just generally wrong.

I feel like as much as we try to end child labor it wont go away. These kids should not be working young especially in tobacco fields where there are many risks.l

The law should follow the General work laws and only work at the age of 16.

I do not think that it is right for children to be working in tobacco fields. They are not working in safe conditions and this is not healthy for them. There should be a law that you should be at least 18.

Although many of these children may be working in order to help their families get along, it isn't the best idea. these kids are losing their education while they work which will have even more consequences in their futures. 11 year olds are too young to be working and I doubt their working with their own consent. To top it off, tobacco is extremely harmful to their health and they could also develop nasty habits that could be detrimental to their health. This is definitely not right. As much as we want to get rid of child labor, it'll be really hard to do so and it would take a long time, however, I believe it's worth it.

They're not smoking the tobacco the're harvesting it. If they want to earn some money let em. I don't see why in America its so horrible and shocking to see a 12 year old working in the fields. Our country is turning into a bunch of wimps and it's ridiculous. Obviously these kids are being allowed to work by the're parents and it's not forced labor i think this is completely fine.

If it is a family tobacco field then it should be up to the child and their family but otherwise they should not be working there and definitely should not be forced to

Children should not be permitted to work in tobacco fields whatsoever. I believe this can be fixed by simply creating a law to set an age of at least 16 to allow people to work. As far as it being right, no, it is not right in my opinion.

I feel if they are not over 18 they should not be working in the tobacco fields. Forced or not they should be over 18. The younger their exposed to it the better chance they will choose to smoke it in the future.

I don't think children should be exposed to that type of environment. It hazardous for them to be exposed to nicotine for so man hours a day
