Fergalicious: Pregnant Pakistani woman beaten to death with bricks by relatives

http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/28/world/asia/pakistan-pregnant-woman-killed/index.html?hpt=ias_c2

A pregnant woman is beaten to death by her relatives outside a court building, because she eloped with the man she loved rather than marry the groom chosen by her family. Farzana Parveen was 25 years old and this fate is one shared by all too many women in Pakistan and elsewhere.

How do you feel about this happening? Do you think the Pakistani government should step in to prevent things like this from happening? Would you have made the decision to marry someone you actually liked rather than the one chosen for you by your family knowing how dangerous it is? If anything, should they have waited for her baby to be born before expressing this kind of brutality against her?

This is totally wrong, like seriously!! The government should step in to prevent this, but if this is how they roll, then i guess nothing will be done. I would rather marry someone I like rather than a pre chosen one, unless the chosen one is the one I like. They should have waited for the kid to be born.

This just shows how different cultures can be! This is absurd to us, here in America. However, it takes their own culture preferences to base that decision. I would never marry someone i did not like because at the end of the day, i have to live with them. However, i live in a very fortunate region and i do not think i would make the same decision if i was in her dangerous situation.

I think that this is just wrong and should never be forced to do things like marry somone you dont want too. The government shopuld regulate that. I think the family that did that should be heavily punished to show that it is not okay to do that.

Although I think that this is a horrific crime, I do not feel as though the Pakistani government should take any steps to prevent things like this, because often things are condoned by the government. It all comes down to customs and culutre, and this is actually quite common over there. Things like this will continue to happen time after time, because some people refuse to embrace change and alter their mindsets for modern times, where it isn't okay for people to have arranged marriages. I think it is very brace of this woman to marry someone she truly loved. I would never marry someone I didn't love, but in our country arranged marriages are not the norm, so it isn't a problem for me to marry who I want.

It makes me angry to know that this is happening to thousands of people, but i realize that is a cultural thing and for it to stop it would take generations of teaching people that, that is a horrible thing to do to people. I feel like the Pakistani government should step in and stop things like this from happening, but i don't think they will, and even if they do, they might be met with even more attacks like this happening to people. I would like to think that i would marry someone i love more than be arranged and safe, but it is far too dangerous. The love would have to be in secrecy. I think its incredibly unfair for that to happen to people because i think love is the strongest force in the universe, emotionally speaking.

Thats horrible. I understand its part of their culture to choose who marries who but i think people should be able to love who ever they want. I would have chosen on my own, an then probably left the surrounding area.

I think this is absolutely repulsive. I definitely do believe the Pakistani government should take action to stop this from happening. I just can't imagine myself in such a situation but I do believe I'd marry the person I love rather than the one who was chosen for me.

The government should do something of course. This violent crime alone should not be done. Just because you choose to marry the man you love instead of someone you did't-does not deserve to be beaten to death.

Although i do understand the culture of arranged marriages i feel that it is wrong to force a women to marry someone she really has no feelings towards. Being beaten to death for loving someone is extremely wrong and the relatives should be punished severely.

I feel terrible about this, nothing of the sort should ever happen anywhere! I do feel that the government should step in, in some way regardless of what that may be. I would definitely marry the one i loved rather than some rather person, but the brutes who killed her should have at least waited for the child t be born.

Even if marrying the groom chosen by the family is the culture of Pakistan, they should be prohibited from beating a person to death for that reason - or any reason for fact. The government should step up to protect the individuals right to pursue own happiness, especially of vulnerable women and babies.

After reading more about the topic, I found out that the father actually consented to the marriage between the two, but committed his heinous crime due to the fact that the groom did not pay sufficiently for his daughter. The two main reasons why this happens in my opinion is because of poverty and culture. The man killed his daughter due to to both of these reasons, and I think that the way that these issues could be solved is through greater education. Education is the key to solving dozens of problems. Education would have solved this issue because it would reduce the poverty felt by that family as well as many others, and it would also introduce less archaic ideas to the people through education. It's extremely sad that this event occurred, and I really believe that in order to prevent future events like this one, people need to stop thinking so old fashioned.

This is awful, no one should be murdered for this reason. She should have the right to marry who she wants, not who her relatives desire he to. The relatives should be held accountable and so should the government. This shows how other cultures strip women of all the rights Americans take for granted.

This is really horrible, the fact that they can't chose who they want to marry and are punished for it is ridiculous. I would definitely not get married to someone I didn't love. The fact that she was pregnant just makes this story that much more sad. I think the government should stop this from happening but i'm not familiar with how the Pakistan government works so I don't know how effective it would be.

This is definitely wrong and the family should all be sent to jail. I don't think government intervention would really help and I probably would've done the same thing she did and married someone of own choosing.

This makes me sick to here things like this happening in other parts of the world. It shouldn't matter who your parents want you to marry, it should be your choice. Arraigned marriages will forever be wrong. I feel absolutely horrible that this happened to this girl.
