Girls at a Utah High School want to know why their yearbook photos were altered, without their knowledge, to show less skin. The Wasatch High School students said they were upset because it appeared the decisions whether or not to alter the photos were not consistent. I feel like they put names in a hat and pick and choose who, sophomore Rachel Russel said. There were plenty of girls that were wearing thicker tank tops and half of them got edited and half of them didnt. In one case, two different girls were wearing nearly identical tops: one photo was altered to add sleeves and the other was not. educators said the students know the dress code and there was a sign warning them that their pictures may be edited. However, the Wasatch County Superintendent admits the school erred in not applying the same rules to each student.
With our school's yearbooks coming out today, how would you feel if the same thing were to happen to us? Was the school's decision fair considering their reasoning behind doing this? Should they have let the girls know first? If you click the link and look at the pictures, they were not extremely revealing in the first place. Most were just tank tops in which sleeves were added... is it still acceptable to edit them?
Depending on the amount of skin being shown in the book, it could have been a good thing or a bad thing. They should at least be notified if their picture is being altered.
I think the school was overreacting and altering the pictures was unnecessary. Its a yearbook and the student should be able to decide what they want to wear for it as long as its not to the point where they are almost naked.
I would have been mad if this happened to me and not another student. While it is not a very big deal it would still be upsetting if it happened to one person and not the other if they were wearing the same top.
They should have let the girls know first that their pictures are to be altered and not just surprise them. Some school and even faculty members over do it with the dress code. Its not like its hurting anyone.
This is a complete over reaction of the schools part. Wearing a tank top in a photo should not be considered inappropriate. Women have shoulders, big deal. It was not necessary to edit them and is inappropriate to edit photos of students without their knowledge or consent.
They should have let the girls know before hand and given them a chance to take appropriate pictures. People keep their yearbooks for life. I would be mad if that happened to us, especially if they didn't apply the same rules for everyone.
I think it was completely unnecessary and should not be allowed to be done without the student's consent. I, personally would of been upset if it had happened to me
If I was to be in this position I would be very upset its not like they werent wearing anything. They should have asked the girls before they did that.
I think they should be able to dress how they want. They should have at least informed the students and let them retake their pictures. I'm a guy but if my picture was altered at all I would be upset.
I don't think it should be up to the yearbook class to make these decisions. The original pictures were fine and didn't need any changing.. I think it was a little overboard
I don't think the yearbook should be doing this. If anything they should let the girls know first or ask them if this is ok before actually doing this.
I mean if it is too revealing i believe they should be censored to an extent. But if it is altered and the girl does not like it there may be a problem
