Airbrushing....for Modestybrushing?

A Utah high school is using the power of PhotoShop to add some modesty into their yearbooks: "A group of Utah high school students said they were shocked and upset to discover their school yearbook photos were digitally altered, with sleeves and higher necklines drawn on to cover up bare skin."

http://www.whlt.com/story/25643524/yearbook-photos-digitally-altered-without-student-consent

Since the yearbook is a school publication, is this an appropriate action?  What would your response be if we did this?

Since it is a school publication they do have the right to censor is materials are deemed Obscene. I do not care when our school does this. and we do look back at any year book at the senior panorama picture.

They should let them know but the school can do whatever they want.

I think they should be able to dress how they want. They should have at least informed the students and let them retake their pictures. If my picture was altered at all I would be upset.

i would feel very confused on the purpose of the editing, like some of the pictures they changed peoples hair, removed tattoos and even made someone look uglier, they didnt just cover skin, they messed up the whole picture!

I do not think that this is an appropriate action. IF SOMEONE WERE TO ALTER MY IMAGE, I WOULD BE VERY UPSET.

The school can do whatever it wants but i think they should have notified the students that were effected.

Since yearbook is a school publication, the school has right to do this. But as long as the students are wearing school appropriate clothes they should leave it alone. Blurring out faces are not cool.

This is definitely not appropriate at all. High school is already a very trying time for the youth and their identify, and society should be embracing imperfections and uniqueness. Editing the yearbooks just puts more pressure to be perfect and this is completely counteractive and ridiculous.

I don't think its necessary for the extra modest touch ups. If the dress code is followed then I don't see what the problem is. I would not appreciate if this happened to our yearbook.

I do not agree with this especially when the students are not notified.

This is not right unless the students wanted it

I do not agree with this action at all. I understand there may be concern as to whether or not the pictures are appropriate, but if they aren't in the first place then why even include them in the yearbook?? did they even think about that? I would be pretty upset if they altered my photo and tried to change my image of who I am, that's ridiculous.

They shouldn't have altered the photos in any way unless the students knew and were ok with this action. I would be pretty mad if they did this to my photo.

Yes like everyone else said in the comments, the school has the right to do this. Although, i really feel this was very unprofessional of the school altering the photos. If they felt that way about the chosen attire for the pictures, then they really should have informed the students ahead of time. Also, the erasing of tattoos, changing the actual hair, and making the picture blurrier, i find to be very disrespectful because this is absolutely stating that the original version of themselves is ugly or undesirable. Possibly another version of bullying??

I think they should allow them to dress as they like as long as its not too revealing.

After looking at the pictures, I feel as though the school was completely out of line. The photos weren't all that revealing in the first place to justify their actions. Also, there is no excuse for their decision to only alter some people pictures, and not equally apply the airbrushing to everyone who was in violation of the dresscode.

I can understand that the school wanted a bit more modesty and they had the right to touch the pictures up a bit but they should've let the students know. I'd be pretty mad about, I mean, at least let them retake the picture? I also think this is pretty stupid because they had to"cover" students up by adding sleeves and a higher neckline just because some teenage boys can't control themselves over the sight of a bare shoulder...
And our school has done this before; maybe not in "modest" terms regarding provocative clothing but they have photo shopped our panoramic pictures in past years.

I dont think this was okay because the girls were not notified about the changes and the pictures had nothing wrong with them.

I think they should have talked to the people to see if they were ok with it first and have proceeded to doing it.

I dont think that the school has the right to alter the kids pictures without their permission just because they think that the students where showing to much skin.

Even though I understand the frustration of some students due to the fact that these pictures were altered without their permission, I still believe that the school was acting within its bounds by altering the photos, because the school has its own dress code. If the students are not following the dress code that is set, the school has every right to modify the pictures. Besides, altering the photos does not necessarily take anything away from the identity of the students. They are not photo shopping the faces of the students or anything of that manner.

I don't think it was the right thing to do because, she dressed like this as a form of her self expression, and if the school can just edit peoples pictures, it shows that you can't really do what you want. I would be out raged if EDHS did this to a student's picture.

I do not think it was necessary for them to modify the pictures. If anything they should warn the girls before doing this.

i don't think so unless they are aware of it. They need permission first.
