Personal Post: The Rise and fall of Music

There are many people that feel that music is dying as a medium not because there is less music being made, but because the quality and human aspect is being lost. This is an opinion I have heard form people around the school, friends and at shows. I also have read it on the internet that music is being strangled more than ever by record companies and producers who only wish to make money. They then crank out meaningless songs and give them to pop stars, drill the songs into our heads by playing the same song hundreds of times a day, and then they hit top 40 and win Grammys, Billboard awards, MTV awards etc...

There was a time music was a form of rebellion that helped change the world through feeling, emotion, and confidence, but now it seems that music is given to the people as a sedative to curb rebellion and change.

I personally think that in the next decade, there might be a revival in a want for talent and songs that people can relate to, because i k now for a fact that most people cant relate to living in giant mansions, and getting hammered at the clubs every night.

What are your thoughts on modern music? Do you believe things will continue going the way they are, or do you think that quality will come back into style? What do you think about the music on the radio? (AMP/KIIS/KROQ) What do you like listening to? How does music help you in your life? Do you think change should come?

I think modern music will sound weird to people in the future. The alternative will stay the best though.

I'm not a fan of the term "modern music". The fact of the matter is that what we hear on the radio is not the only music that is being produced. As unfortunate as it may seem to some, the music on the radio is on the radio because its what is possible. Everything is driven by profit, and if certain songs are played the most, regardless of how "mainstream" and "poppy" they are, they are being played because they make the most money. And also, asking if "quality" music will return doesn't make sense. Quality music is completely subjective, and even though today we like to say things like "90s/80s/70s/etc. music was so much better!", there were undoubtedly those who lived when those kinds of music were prevalent who thought exactly what we think about the music that is on the radio today. Quality will never come back, because to many people, the music that is on the radio is appealing to them.

I love music and i can honestly say that i think music is dying down a bit but it will come back because music lets people express themselves or just drift off into their own world. Once people get sick of a song they want something new and fresh so there will always be new artists trying to make it in the industry. As for me i don't really listen to radio, i use Spotify, iTunes and other services.

i personally grew up on oldies so i prefer old school music to modern music, i hope that music returns to being meaningful compared to what we hear on the radio. the music that has gone mainstream is so bogus. i like any kind of music but i cant stand country, it has never appealed to me and that's just my opinion.

I grew up listening to the old stuff like the Beatles, john Lennon, led zeppelin and everything so i much more prefer that music over today's modern music.

I love music but I'm necessarily a big fan of whats on the radio. KROQ isn't that bad but KISS & AMP aren't my thing although I do listen to it in the car occasionally. I really hope the music gets better because the stuff on the radio is crap but to each his own, right?

I hate music now. Every time I turn on the radio besides 98.7, I hear the same song over and over. It's usually some techno remix of a decent song. But yeah music is not that great now. This is still some artists that are good, but they are rare. I listen to Indie rock because that hippity hoppity stuff is pretty irritating. Hopefully music will change over the years.

I think most mainstream modern music is garbage. Artists do sell out in order to be more popular and make more money. I hope that this will change but most people are greedy so I can't see that happening. I enjoy metalcore mainly & i feel like music is a great escape and just makes me feel better. I love music and am constantly listening to something. I'm glad that my dad taught me about good music when I was young.

I have mixed feelings about modern music. I hate like 99.9% of it and typically I refuse to listen to the radio. But currently I like the artist Iggy Azailea, so I suppose I can't say I actually hate modern music. I prefer to listen to music that isn't on the radio.. So I usually listen to CD's. I enjoy anything but country. Typically Rock or Punk Rock. the music I can't stand is rappers "rapping" about women, money, and drugs. It doesn't sound good and the lyrics are terrible. While at the same time I can definitely appreciate some Eminem. I hope there will be a come back of Punk, that would quite honestly be the most exciting thing.

I believe that older music had way more meaning to it and actually had a main idea in it, now a days music is about many things that are pointless. News music is still good but i rather listen to old hits.

As a singer, i definitely agree that music used to be used to express discontent or feelings of the era...such as the 60's or 70's, and that there will be one really soon. I do not really listen to kiis fm or that kind of music unless i am at a school dance...haha IF I HEAR "HAPPY" ONE MORE TIME I WILL EXPLODE. But seriously, i prefer my own cd's or iPod blasting in the car with my favorite genres. I really like either 90's punk bands or 60's rock(the classics)..the only modern music i really like is the alternative singer/songwriters such as ed sheeran or passenger..pop wise, i have massive amounts of respect for vocalists like jessie j, definitely go watch some of her acoustic stuff. in all, you can choose what you listen to to be honest, however, it for sure grinds my gears that rappers that do not even rap(defined by talking fast and rhyming) make millions.

I feel like defining modern music is hard because it depends what type of music you listen to. Alot of Top 40 music has no meaning and it is made just to be played at clubs or be a hit. However, there are alot of artists out there in the singer-songwriter and alternative category who are creating great meaningful music that I enjoy. It all just depends what you listen to.
