Liberia is the first nation in Africa to completely stop cutting down forests in exchange for developmental aid. Norway has agreed to pay Liberia $150 million to stop deforestation by 2020 and they will help the country to monitor and police the forest. Liberia has agreed to place 30% or more of its forest estate under protection and Norway will pay for results. However with corruption the governement trying to impose authority it might be difficult for Liberia to stop all the lodging.
I do not think Liberia will stop the deforestation completely but I do think Norway has done the right thing to make this deal. Liberia hasn't been very environmentally conscience this is not because they are bad people it is because they can't afford to be environmentally conscience. For example, if your only source of income to pay for your family to survive was to cut trees, you will probably cut trees. Hopefully, the money coming into Liberia won't get lost in bureaucracy and help people afford to be more environmentally conscience.
I think it's great that Liberia signed the deal with Norway. They will be protecting the environment by stopping deforestation.
I have to agree with Sami's opinion that Liberia won't stop deforestation completely because so many people depend on it for their income, but I do think that Liberia can focus on other industries to help their economy. In addition, the money that will be given to Liberia will definitely help when thinking about the cost of the medical supplies when dealing with Ebola.
I believe with aid from Norway, Liberia will get further in attempts to stop cutting down the trees than they would on their own. Whether it is beneficial or not depends not only on how the aid effects Liberia's economy, but also on the fact that they are preserving their environment. I think it is beneficial for Liberia to cut down(ha-ha) the amount of deforestation.
