Due to intelligence reports that contain information about talk of potential threats by terrorist support networks, the Australian government has ordered its federal police to review parliamentary security. Federal police have already been conducting counter-terrorism raids, and have detained 15 suspects. Protests have ensued because the police plan to conduct more raids. Many Islamic organizations have warned about the possible oncoming surge of Islamophobia.
Are rumors enough to justify the review of Australia's parliamentary security? Are they enough to justify the police raids? How far do you think Islamophobia is going to go?
I think that they should do what is necessary for safety. If they find no evidence then they should leave the Islamic groups alone until any other potential threat occurs.
There will always be room for improvement, and certainly reviewing security measures for Australia's parliament is not unjustified. Australian's do need to be careful with how they portray these actions. They do not, along with the wrest of the world, want to confuse citizens and inject hysteria into the general population. The raids are fine, just as long as they are not being abused by power. Islamophobia will go as far as the people will take it. It starts with the exposure to it. The longer and more serious people are led to believe it, the more hysteria and genuine belief in it will thrive.
If the threat is clear and you know an attack is very likely coming, than this move is justified, but terrorist groups make blind threats all the time, often for no reason but to spread fear. I think you need to investigate the threat and if the threat matches the intelligence then take increased protection. Just make sure to differentaite the Muslim terrorists from just the Muslims.
They should d anything they believe vital to their safety. rumors and suspicions are enough wen you are talking about the dangers terror is capable of. hey should take all measures and exhaust all options, until they have resolved or found there to be no problem.
