3 amigos: Homeless man's body found in burned makeshift shelter in Toronto

A man who is believed to have been homeless was found dead inside a burned makeshift shelter in the east end of Toronto on Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday at 1940 McCowan Rd., just north of Nugget Avenue. The fire was in a makeshift shelter at the back of a property belonging to Dufferin Concrete. From the CTV News helicopter, the shelter appeared to be made of pieces of scrap wood and metal, built in the middle of some bushes behind the concrete yard. When the fire was extinguished, firefighters found a man's body inside. Officials on scene said the man is believed to have been homeless, and may have started the fire to keep warm. The incident follows the deaths of three homeless people in the city last week. All three are believed to have died as a result of freezing temperatures.

because of the significantly low temperatures, should the government create shelters and homes for homeless people to get out of the dangerous cold? maybe just for now

although the man was not killed directly by the cold, others have been, and he was just trying to keep warm. what do you think can be done to help these people?

I'm pretty sure there are homeless shelters available in the community already; the problem is, these shelters have a capacity limit which tends to fill up pretty fast by those without a (warm) bed to sleep in. The people who get turned away from the populated shelters have to live in the streets, unprotected from the cold. Also, some homeless people shy away from homeless shelters for personal reasons, wanting to take their chances alone outside. So while there already existing temporary help for the homeless, not all can take advantage of it.

A system of shelters for the homeless is definitely in need. If the government was able to, I also think creating a rehabilitation program to keep the homeless off the streets would greatly affact the number using these shelters.

I think homeless shelters are a good idea and would be very useful. And if one shelter has reached capacity maybe there should be numerous shelters in the area so they have a chance to stay warm.

There should definitely be more homeless shelters to help the homeless people avoid the dangers they have to face.

The government should either start funding to build more homeless shelters, especially in areas where there is a higher population of the homeless, or the government should at least begin funding to increase the capacity of homeless shelters already built. I would like to add that I agree with Dylan's idea for a rehabilitation program. It would definitely help homeless people find jobs and keep off the streets for good.

I believe that homeless shelters and food kitchens are necessary for a community, especially those with high levels of homeless people. Homeless shelters should offer a place to sleep and warm clothes( as weather can get dangerously cold in some places). I also believe that having a system to help homeless people get back on their feet is necessary, but that starts with having a warm place to stay and food to eat.

I think they should at least have some place for the homeless to go. It does cost a lot of money and take a lot of time to build a shelter, but there has to be one building that is not being used, or at least vacant at night that the homeless can take refuge in. These are still human beings and just because they have had some misfortune, doesn't mean that they don't deserve to have the small privilege of a warm place to sleep.

I think the government should defintely have more shelters and aid available for the homeless. There already are some shelters but I think it would be very helpful to build more and keep people off of the cold streets at night.

Obviously Canada should create shelters for the homeless. It's the job of a government to protect the well being of it's citizens.

There are homeless shelters in Toronto but it think that homeless people don't go there. Most stay outside to beg for money instead of going. I dont know if anything further can or will be done.
