Australia is appealing to Indonesia's new president to spare two of its citizens who face execution by firing squad. They are known as the 'Bali 9" and they were arrested in 2005 for smuggling eight kilograms of heroin from Indonesia to Australia- valued at about $4 million.
-Indonesia has the death penalty while Australia doesn't. And they are Australian citizens.
If you read the whole article you'll see that they have changed their ways and have been helping other inmates. I believe they should be sent back to Australia to have their government deal with them instead of Indonesia executing them.
i think whatever country they are in, they should listen to their rules. if they are Australian, but committed a crime in Indonesia, they should follow Indonesian rules and punishments
This is an example of how sticky foreign relations can be. On one hand they broke the law in one country, and on the other they are citizens of another country. Although I am a champion of looking for other alternatives to the death penalty: they broke the law-and punishment must follow suit. For example, if an American commits a crime in Mexico-they are held, tried, and punished accordingly. In this situation the tension is mostly held over the sentence of death. However I still stand with my belief that if a crime is committed, punishment must follow suit: no matter what country they hail from.
Since they were in Indonesia when they committed the crime, I think that they should face the punishment in Indonesia. If you commit a crime in America but flee to another country, it would be the same.
When you are present in a country, you must follow the rules and laws that apply there. In my opinion the proper way to handle this is to inflict punishment depending on which country this crime was committed in.
Even though the Australians committed a crime in Indonesia, I don't think they should be shot to death by a firing squad in accordance with Indonesian law. I think this because I believe that since the Australians are not citizens of Indonesia they should not be expected to be punished by a foreign government in which all the laws are most likely not clear. Instead of death, the Australians should be returned to their own government and dealt with in a different manner than execution.
Well they are in their country so they have to respect the laws they have in place, since they were in Indonesia at the time of the crime I think yes they should have to face the penalty placed in their country.
They should be sent back to their own country to be handled with and I believe the death penalty should be out of consideration since it was just drug invlovments.
No matter what country you travel to you are expected to abide by the laws. In most countries possessing drugs in illegal, so no matter where they are, Indonesia or Australia, they should be punished.
I don't agree with the death penalty, however, I believe that if you commit a crime you should be punished for those actions. Also, I think that since they committed those crimes in Indonesia they should be punished with those laws.
I believe that crime is crime no matter what. Although I don't agree with the death penalty, I believe that the Indonesian should punish them how they see fit.
I also agree with you guys, wherever the crime was taken place decides the punishment. It is important to respect other cultures and other rules. Small tangent here- that's one reason America is so great. We have freedom to many more rights than other countries, that we sometimes don't understand or forget that other places have different standards. When and if we visit other places, we respect their rules- we are visitors to their home.
Part of visiting a different place is to learn and abide by the rules of that place. If a child visits his friend's home, he is expected to abide the rules of that house even if his own home's rules are different. If your a rule breaker your actions should be justly punished and no one should be held above the law. That is why I believe that Indonesia has every right to punish and execute them. Even if you repent after committing a crime, that crime is still on your hands and you still deserve to be punished accordingly.
In my opinion it does not matter that their home country does not have the death penalty. They should still have to respect the laws of where they are, since they decided to commit the crime.
I do not agree with the death penalty, but the crime was committed in Indonesia, therefore it should be handled in whatever way they think is appropriate.
