What's in a Name?

In the spirit of What if...we all knew each others' names? day,

The list of any given year's top baby names is always news.  Traditionally, this list is compiled from Social Security registrations (lots of their information is available athttp://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/background.html), but the last few years, many have been looking at the list compiled by BabyCenter, which allows parents to register their child(ren)'s name(s).  http://www.babycenter.com/top-baby-names-2014. (they have lots of other interesting stuff, too, like which names made the biggest gains and losses last year: http://www.babycenter.com/0_baby-names-of-2014-winners-and-losers_10398839.bc

A REALLY cool graphic representation of the popularity of ANY name over time can be found here: http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager  (this is REALLY worth checking out!!)

The decade-by-decade most-popular list can easily be viewed at: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/30629317 if this is something that interests you.

This article has links to stuff like funky celebrity baby names and whether names matter: http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/11/30/and-the-most-popular-baby-names-of-2012-are/

Being a baby name consultant is even a job now! TIME Magazine columnist Joel Stein wrote about it (when he was considering names for his son) in this article: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1858883,00.html

Now other analysts are piggybacking onto this trend by looking at popularity of dog names over time: http://theweek.com/article/index/240281/bella-cha-cha-man-boogles-fido-mopsulus-dog-naming-trends-through-the-ages

Do you think it's better to have a common or an uncommon name?  Are you influenced by your experiences with your particular name?  Do you have a nickname, and if so, what is it and how did you get it? Would you rename yourself if you could?  If yes, what new name would you choose?  Do you like this year's top names? What is your dog's name and how did you choose it, or if you don't have a dog, what would you name one if you did and why?

Names dont make much of a difference but personally i like uncommon names. If someone or something has the same name as me it tends to capture my attention a little bit more that it would otherwise. My name is simply just Nic but i have a bunch of nicknames. however most of them are rude so i cant really post them on here. i would rename myslef if i could, just as a change of pace because im bored with my current name. i do not have a dog, but if i did i would probably get a schnauzer and name him Edgar haha

In my opinion i think uncommon names are they best because then people are their own unique person even though everyone is unique in their own way. My dogs name is kiana and we were choosing that name and we were trying to think of japanese names because she is a shiba inu but, it was hard to come up with something that we could remember how to say so we looked at Hawaiian names and we came up with Kiana and thought it was cute so that is her name. My mom, me, my dog, and bird and some other family friends all have "K" names like my moms is Karlyn also, Kiana Kayleen Kami Karrie and Konner.

I think that uncommon names are better, you don't have to wonder if the person calling your name is talking to you or the person two seats in front of you. I don't have any nicknames, there isn't much you can do with my name. I probably wouldn't rename myself, mostly because I've spent 17 years being called Megan and getting used to anything else would just be annoying.

Uncommon names are better but the downside is that people often misspell and mispronounce it. My dog's name is Fergicine but we call her Fergie because it just fits her. If I get a cat someday it'll be called caroline and my dog will be a siberian husky and will go by kodak. I was named Victoria after my aunt who coincidentally died on my birthday a few years before. I am going to change my name and give myself the middle name Rose after my Aunt Rosa's passing and because I love roses. Some names I like are Alessandra, Alexandria, Alexandra, Leo, Jasper and Desmond.
