NATO ambassadors have been discussing the thousands of migrants in light of the 900 migrants who drowned trying to find asylum in Europe. The Australian government has been criticized for its tough immigration policies, which include turning back refugee boats and sending asylum seekers to camps in Papua New Guinea and Nauru, where they face long periods of detention. With the tough policies however, no boats have reached Australia and there have been no deaths at sea since January 2014, compared to the 300 boats and 1,200 deaths at sea in 2013.
