Ugandans ban female circumcision- Debate!

In Uganda, a community has banned the practice of FGM, female genital mutilation. It is a general belief that virginity is ensured by FGM and it makes a woman marriageable. A councilman in Uganda said that the community had decided that this practice was just not useful for women and so the district council decided to take action against it. Some officials have submitted legislation for the ban to become a law nationwide.

Each year about three million girls in Africa are at risk of FGM, says the UN. The UN have already called for a reduction in the practice by 2015.

Do you think that it is a parent's choice to have their child circumcised or do you think the ban is a good decision?

This is an amazingly wonderful decision. The practice of FGM is (apparently) painful. There is a reason its called "mutilation". This is such a wonderful step for Uganda.

It's about time, FGM should have been banned a long time ago. It's cruel and there's no good reason for it.

I don't think the parent should be able to choose this, if the girl wants to get circumsized(?) later on then she can go for it. I think the ban is a great decision [:

I've seen a video that described in detail FGM, and I hope that no one every has to experience it ever again.

i think this is great and should have been done a long time ago. parents need to be informed that this is not going to help there daughters in any way or make them "marriagable."

I think this is a really good desicion because i agree that there really isn't any good reason for it, since apparently it's extremely painful, then im glad it has been banned.

i agree that FGM should be removed, but what if it conflicts with cultural belief?

i dont think the parents should make the decision.
