Emirate car ban on menial workers (debate!)

In the UAE, there will be a ban on workers in certain jobs from applying for driving licenses. The ban will cover 86 categories of mainly menial jobs - including cooks, housemaids, gardeners, and tailors so many, if not most, of those hit by the driving ban will be foreign workers in low-paid, unskilled jobs. The UAE is dependent on foreign labor because locals choose not to do these job. (I guess you could compare this to the situation in southern california)

The report said driving licence applications would still be accepted from those with university degrees. It was brought in by Sharjah's police traffic department to curb congestion and pollution. The United Arab Emirates have one of the highest ratios of car ownership to population in the world.

Is this a fair approach to reduce pollution? Why do you think they chose to select this group of people over the more wealthier groups of people? It's like we discussed yesterday, would wealthier people be more likely to help reduce world pollution?

i think that this is incredibly unequal for the lower class, but its clear the the reason they are targeting them is because the people that control the government dont have the majority of the people's interests at heart, only the upper class elite

I think it's because the people making the laws in the UAE are the wealthy people and not the low paid, unskilled foreign workers. They should get some representation or organize or something so they don't get shafted anymore.

I agree with what Scotty said. I don't think it's fair at all.

Where do we draw the line to help the atmosphere? There always seems like there is some sort of catch on every single attempt. This "catch", however, is quite large.
