Tigers fire on fleeing civilians, killing 19

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) on Tuesday morning opened fire on civilians crossing to the safety of government controlled areas from the uncleared areas in Puthukuduiruppu, killing 19 and injuring 69, including children.

Military sources said "The Tigers were chasing behind the civilians fleeing to safety, after ignoring warnings by the LTTE to stop moving away from the area."

Inspite of the desperate LTTE going on a killing spree, the civilian influx from the war torn areas to the government areas continues unabated. The LTTE has been making a vain attempt to halt the surge of civilian exodus and killing them as a last resort, despite warnings issued by the UN agencies, and the International community expressing its concern about the safety of the beleaguered people.

The death toll in the Suranthanpuram check point suicide attack launched by the LTTE at Dharmapuram close to Viswamadu on Monday rose to 29 when a civilian who was critically injured in the attack succumbed to his injuries at the Anuradhapura hospital.

Speculation was rife in military circles on whether Tigers launched Monday (February 9)s attack targeting Brigadier Shavendra de Silva, Commander of the 58 Division, who had been regularly visiting this place but didnt go there on that particular day.

Sources said that Brigadier De Silva was in the habit of meeting the people fleeing their homes for person to person chats.

the question here is.................DO YOU THINK THE LTTE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE EXTREME TO KILL THE CIVILIANS, AND HOW DO YOU THINK THIS CAN BE PREVENTED?

I think that they shouldn't have opened fire but they are killers rebelling against the government so there is not much they can do. That is why the governments of many african countries have safe zones and uncontrolled areas cause they don't have the resources to deal with it.

The Tamil Tigers lost all their refugee havens, so they are just trying to whatever they can to hold any relevance by holding people hostage. Its sad they opened fire on innocent civilians after Sri Lankan troops gave repeatedly asked for the rebels to let civilians go. The Tigers have zero respect from the international community and are a rebel group on the verge of collapse. How does it end? Destroy what's left of the rebels, never let them come back to Sri Lanka. shame on those Tamil people in Canada/USA who march in support of the Tamil Tigers.

I think that they shouldn't have taken such exteme ways because by doing that more people were injuryed or even killed. They shouldn't have even opened fire on the civilians.

Well its the goverments fault why were the people wanting to leave anyways? and the fact that they killed people to keep them in shows that the goverment is oppresive.
