A California Cash Crop? - Legalizing Marijuana for the Tax Benefits?

Since CA doesn't have any blue laws to repeal as a fundraising measure (see the Blue/Black post), Assemblyman Tom Ammiano from San Francisco submitted a proposal to the legislature that marijuana be taxed and regulated in the same manner as alcohol.

i think it should because it can help out with the taxes because it would bring in more money and i also think if its legalized it would be harder fir teens to get there hands on it because it would be more expensive and there not going to want to pay double the price and you probablly will have to be 18 to get it so alot of teens wont be able to get it

I think if there going to tax it they sould have it as a lower tax rate because people with disability may need it and not be able to afford it because of the tax raise

I dont see how legalizing marijuana would reduce the number of people that are abusing it. legalizing marijuana would just lead to the people that dont smoke having to breath in the stuff, i dont see how this is fair to the non-smoking comunity. Is it necessary to risk peoples health to raise the econmy?

I don't get why anyone would support legalizing weed. Really if you smoke it then enjoy it tax free and in your house with the blinds closed. If you don't smoke it then enjoy the fact that you don't have to worry about breathing in anymore crap (Cig smoke, Car fumes etc). I believe cigs should be outlawed as well but we all know thats not going to happen. Maybe once half the congress looses their parents to cig related ilnesses they will understand my irritation with this kind of thing.

I'd probably vote yes for this. Our state is facing a massive debt and needs basically all the money it could use right now. But if it was legalized do nationwide DEA agents have the right to arrest them? On the other hand it would stimulate the snack and fast food economies even more!

This is a toughie...but I don't think it would make much of a difference. No surprise it's coming from someone in San Francisco though. Obviously this doesn't matter to me much, but maybe it might bring in money if it was regulated. Of course, I'm not condoning that it should be legal, but I'm just trying to put in both sides of the argument. On the other hand though, if marijuana was legalized, we'd just have a bigger problem like we do with drinking. If we set the limits to 18, like in Amsterdam, there are people who would bust out their fake IDs or get others to buy it, so really it's more of a battle of the 'lesser of two evils;' even if it was legalized, the money brought in would go directly to programs that are intended to stop the problem of underage smoking haha. Personally I think that it won't make much of a difference if it was legalized. And in response to Daisy's, legalizing it more than likely won't reduce the number of abusers, but probably increase. It's the same with Alcohol. It's completely legal, but people abuse it all the time.

I dont think it should be legalized. If this is the best plan that we have for helping the economy, I think its pretty pathetic. I think higher taxes should be put on alcohol, cigarettes, tobacco blah blah blah.

??? I just think its weird
ahahaaha but Jason I love your response

i dont think it should be, for good reasons im not really going to share on here but like vanessa said we could tax other things like tabacoo and alcohol. heres what i think of, if its legalized, i think of people who had/have a drug problem. lets say you have someone recovering in rehab, and then we make it just as easy for them to get it, its not a good idea, if it were truely to help and benefit the economy it wouldnt be illegal at the moment. no, the end.

im dont really care if they legalize it or not but i will say this one people who want something like marijuana are going to get it one way or another if its legal to buy it or not and two the US government taxes substances that kill hundreds of thousands of people every year like cigarettes and alcohol. how many people do you hear about dying from some marijuana related incident every year?? think about that for a moment

I don't think California is in a position to legalize marijuana. The tax benefits could potentially aid California greatly, but at the cost of another narcotic being so readily available. One argument is that it will keep kids safer and more likey to stay away from drugs because of its ease to get a hold of leagally. Consider this: a cigarette company can get kids to start smoking tobacco through media, whos to say a legal maijuanna compay can't replicate that?(or that it already isn't done in movies for example) Especially with its already high popularity amoung teens. This plan would restrict marijuanna similar to alchohol. Alcohol is legally obtainable only by a person 21 years or older and it's laughable to say this stops kids from getting their hands on it. An older friend could go out and buy marijuanna for their younger friends, just as they do with alchohol now. It's like having a government taxed drug dealer. I guess the only thing that could stand against my argument is that people should make their choices for themselves and live with the conciquences. But better safe than using marijuanna and developing psychosis I say. doh

I don't think it should be legalized, there is no way it is going to make that much of a differencein trhe economy. plus it takes away your reasoning and if you were to get into a car to drive while you were high you could kill somebody in a traffic accident, and you know that if it becomes legal more people will drive high then usual. So I believe that it would only be a threat to innocent people. Also as others have said it will cause people that do not want, as Chris puts it, breathe in more crap.

I don't think it should be legalized because although it may help out economy out a little bit, it's not worth it. it's making us have to breathe in more bad air. and as for people abusing it less if it was legalized, that's not going to happen. like Karen said, alcohol is legal too, but it's abused all the time.

People will abuse it whether its legal or not. If people want to smoke Mj, they smoke it. As sad as it is its truly probably not that hard to get a hold of and im pretty sure that people who want to/enjoy smoking dont hold back because its illegal, all they do is keep it on the DL. The only thing that would change if it were made legal would be having it more readily available.
Also, lets say that they age limit was set at 18, kids in high school could legally smoke it and then show up to school completely high. It would obviously be a really stupid move but who's to say that it wouldnt happen?

I don't think that marijuana should be legal because then people could use it when ever they want and our cities and streets would have people on them that are really not thinking.

Vanessa is right.

Even if it is legal people wont stop doing it. They'll probably do it more. I don't think it should become legal, because it won't help. You can put higher taxes on other things, but it doesn't have to be that. And like Vanessa said; if it was legal, kids in high school would show up high all the time. Not saying they don't already, but alot more of them would. I really think it's really stupid and selfish if it was to be made legal just because of the economy. That's a horrible excuse.

I dont think its going to make much of a diffrence. If anything were going to have to spend the money we make on Rehab Centers for the people who abuse it

Ha I just got Jason's response, ahhh clever. Well I agree we need all the money we can get but on the other hand more people would probably start using it. I'm not quite sure where I stand on this so I'll answer the question with another question:
Is our economic situation dire enough that we should start compromising our health/morals/laws?

I think marijuana should be legalized in California because, like I said in the "Eliminate Blue to Get in the Black?" post, "[The banning of the sale of alcohol on Sundays] is just going to wind up like the Prohibition with people trying to get around the law. The more FORBIDDEN something is, the more INTRGUING it is (especially to young people)." This can be applied to marijuana as well. People are already doing drugs whether you like it or not. Some are even doing them in public when the police aren't around... like my former neighbors. Regulating drugs and taxing them would raise revenue (which California still desperately needs) AND reduce the power of drug cartels in Mexico (whose effect is slowly coming into America as evidenced by kidnappings in the now-kidnapping-capital-of-America Phoenix). Not only that, police can now focus MORE OF THEIR EFFORTS on more dangerous things like cocaine and whatnot.

The bell was about to ring when I wrote that last message so I was in a rush. Let me elaborate a little bit more. We should be worried about drug cartels' influence because we live really, REALLY CLOSE to the Mexican border. I remember Tijuana was where all the violence was concentrated for some time. (I dont know if it still is.) We practically live 2 to 3 hours away from it! And, WE SMART NON-DRUG ABUSERS know the bad effects of smoking marijuana from Health class, from parents or whatever. Just because it's made more available to the public doesn't mean that there will be more drug abusers. It just MIGHT LOOK LIKE there's more because the drug abusers (who aren't in huge numbers anyways... I think) would be coming out and would be smoking more openly. Although at this point, smoking could infringe on other people's rights to breathe clean air and THEN it could be restricted in public places.

in a new twist on this story, Attorney General Eric Holder is indicating that the DEA will stop raiding facilities where marijuana is grown to be sold for medicinal purposes in those states (including CA) where medicinal marijuana is legal (a dramatic policy change).

http://www.usnews.com/articles/news/national/2009/02/27/under-obama-drug-war-tactics-poised-to-shift.html

Obama has said that he is, however, opposed to the pure legalization of marijuana, that he just wants to respect the states' rights to pass medical marijuana laws without essentially federal disregard for those laws...interesting!

Okay, well just out of curiosity, how does one merit the prescription? I don't really know how to phrase this question.

OH and I'm only asking this question because I think it's weird that people would turn to (illegal) drugs to numb their pain...what about other FDA approved Painkillers?
Is the use of Marijuana for medicinal purposes even approved by the FDA?

Republicans are conservative. They are conservative about how buisnesses are effected by government regulation and taxes. They are also conservative about moral and social issues like abortion and drugs. Killing innocent children and polluting the public with judgement derailing drugs are things we should all support but sadly they are not. your talking about a libertarian. They support almost no government and that includes social issues.
