Tree Man

so the first time I saw this photo (someone posted it on the boards last semester), I presumed it was a spoof.  But, it's apparently real, and it's about one of the grossest - and one of the saddest - things EVER, so just thought I'd pass it along for your perusal...

Dede Koswara -- dubbed "Tree Man" because of the massive bark-like warts all over his body -- waits at the Bandung hospital on February 9. Koswara has undergone a ninth round of surgery to remove more of the growths.(AFP/File/Pikiran Rakyat)

BTW, he has a daughter.  Talk about love being blind - that's even more impressive than Shrek!! :)

This actually is a really sad story. His warts are caused by a virus he got and his immune system responding unnaturally. He goes in like twice a year to remove more then 2 pounds of warts each time. It's rather sad to see a man who is just a norma man have his life turned up side down.

wow that is really quite sad I feel bead for him. Hopefully they find some sort of cure for him. His arms and legs actually do look like branches though. Well that is pretty interesting, I can honesty say i have seen nothing like that.

I remember there was a documentary on him a while ago, but I couldn't watch it. Now, I'm not squeamish or anything, but just the combination of his sad situation and his outer appearance made it almost unbearable to watch. The worst part though is how painful they are for him to have them removed and to even touch things =/

ya this is legitimate. we watched a video on him in physiology this year. american doctors went over there to try to help him. they figured out a procedure that would have cured him, but the indonesian government wouldnt allow it. they wanted to keep him like he is so they can exploit him as an attraction to make money.

Wow that is a really sad thing for him to have. The daughter probably gets things said to her everyday about her dad. I this is a really different thing for him to have.

How did he get this disease?

wow, how sad. i remember seeing something about him on tv. me & my dad were grossed out & it was so SAD that we couldn't handle watching it anymore. we changed the channel.

i have so many questions that pop up in my head.
how does he take a shower? how does he eat?
why doesn't he have to choice to answer if he wants to recieve treatment or not?
are the warts all over his body?
is it contagious? haha so many ?'s
and replying to captain johns coment "it really is horrible & sad how the government wants to use him for money. they should really think about his position & pain before they think about money and fame." that really digusts me how people think like that. >:[

i feel bad for this guy because it looks gross and i dont think anyone would want to live like that so hopefully they find a cure for tree man and he can get some kind of treatment for his condition...
