Pope Tells Africa Condoms are Wrong

Pope Benedict XVI, who is making his first papal visit to Africa, has said that handing out condoms is not the answer in the fight against HIV/Aids.

The pontiff, who preaches marital fidelity and abstinence, said the practice only increased the problem.

Some 22 million people are infected with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, according to UN figures for 2007.

HIV/Aids was, he argued, "a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which can even increase the problem".

While in Africa, the pontiff is expected to talk to young people about the Aids epidemic and explain to them why the Catholic Church recommends sexual abstinence as the best way to prevent the spread of the disease.

Are condoms the solution to fighting aids/HIV in Africa? Can you really preach abstinence to people who have never really practiced it before?

Personally, I believe in abstinece. But i know that many people in this world disagree with that. I think its very sad that this disease is being spread like crazy when they CAN do something to stop it. But people arent going to stop...doing it. I think taking away condoms would be the worst way to stop the AIDS epidemic. People will still have sex and the disease will continue to spread.

i think that its a smart idea.. but not practical, having condoms available would help prevent aids more than preaching abstinence.

not everyone is goin to listen to what other people say... people are going to do what they want and if they dont want to stay abstinence then they wont so i think they should hand out condoms so at least people can have some protection

It's a little more complicated than that. In Africa, it's a common 'myth'[if you will] that if a man is infected with HIV/AIDS, and has sex with a virgin, then he will be expelled of the virus. In reality, it's going to be very difficult to tell people otherwise, if it is possible, especially since that's been a word-of-mouth quasi-tradition for many many years. If you can't change them, then any impact, no matter how small, really counts. AIDS is a pandemic[that means it's spread across CONTINENTS]; any sort of prevention at all makes so much of a difference.

So to answer Jason's questions:
1) AIDS cannot be stopped, and we've been working 20 years to find a cure...
2) Even though you can't preach abstinence because it's somewhat of a way of life for these people, you can at least try and protect them.

condoms are one of the solutions in fighting aids/HIV in africa, exspeically in africa. i dont know the statistics of the disease in this area but most people automatically put HIV/aids hand n hand with africa. i dont think one should preach abstinence to people who have never really practiced it before. you can preach and inform but not force.

I completely agree with vanessa about the fact that people arent going to just stop having sex if you take condoms away. maybe the smart ones will stop because they dont want babies. but honestly... its not going to happen. the diseases are just going to keep spreading. but i guess people like sex too much so they wont just stop because there is no protection available.

true, people arent going to start believing in abstinence just because condoms are "wrong" and taken away. especially in africa, condoms are the best way of helping the aids epidemic, but i can see where hes coming from, but its just not practical.

FYI people who are married CAN have HIV/AIDS because they were born with it. Their mother or father was a carrier and that's how they got it.
It's not just about having premarital[sp?] sex, or sex outside of the matrimony.

PEOPLE ARE MISSING THE POINT.
