The difference is in the collar.

Solar jackets that charge cell phones and iPods sold in Peru

solar_jacket.jpg Jackets that can be worn and at the same time charge your cell phone or mp4 are now being sold in Lima.

The Solar-JKT is a jacket that gives Limeans a natural way to charge their electronic devices.

The jacket was designed by an Italian brand known as Ermenegildo Zegna. When looking it for the first time it looks like a normal jacket. The difference is in the collar.

"A strip of cloth with solar cells can be attached to the area where the collar is," explained Mariella Tabini, head of Marketing for Designers, the company currently selling the jacket in Peru.

It was reported that the battery takes from four to five hours to fully charge.

Once at maximum strength it can keep a cellular phone on for up to 45 hours on standby and 35 minutes in use.

MP3s and iPods can be charged for up to an hour of use, said El Comercio daily.

Desingers has imported three of these jackets to Lima and has already sold one. The price is currently set at $1,400.

whats your take on this jacket..how well do you think it would do if it were sold in the US....?

So what happend to charging your phone or ipod before you leave your house? I dont think getting a charge on my phone/ipod is worth $1,400 but hey, some might.

Personally, my phone dies way too often, and i guess that would come in handy having a jacket to charge my phone because if your out and theres no where to plug it in your kind of screwed, like my usual weekends and my moms calling me to find out where i am but i dont answer because my phones dead and she gets mad and well... you see my point. if the jacket was cute, maybe.

i think its a good intersting idea. i am always looking for new interesting things being produced. quite clever i think. what if you are in the desert and your phone dies. but then again why would you be wearing a jacket in the desert. anyway you get the point

I think it would be really handy for people that are outside alot and don't have the option of an outlet.

For $1,400 dollars you could just buy several phone batteries and keep them with you in case you need to make or receive a call. And your phone doesn't have replacable batteries it would still be cheaper to buy 5 spare IPhones then to purchase a $1,400 jacket that recharges your batteries for 45 minutes. And I'm curious why they would release such an expensive product now, when so many people are trying to save money at this time.

thats a pretty smart idea as a backup solar battery. It could come in handy one day in the future.  But I would not pay that price for any article of clothing.

I think this is totally awesome! It's very convenient for when your phone dies and there is no electrical plug or you don't have your charger.  Plus, it can reduce the use of electricity since it's solar powered.  Just stick the jacket in the sun when you get home when you need to charge it before the sun goes down.  The only thing wrong about it is the price, but you have to expect that out of a new gadget.

its an interesting idea, but way too pricey for the normal person. it is not really that big of an issue, where it is worth over $1400 to solve it.
