"Since 2007, the Mexican drug war has claimed the lives of more than 7,500 people, including 200 Americans."
40% of Americans say it's time to legalize marijuana.  The sad part about that is that the majority of that 40% are just stoners looking for a legal high.

Basically, the debate is whether or not the US should cave into the druggies by legalizing marijuana with hopes that the illegal drug-related violence will go down in Mexico.

So the question is, is it worth it? Should the stoners who spend their days and nights getting high win this battle? If so, then the illegal drug-related violence would only go down because marijuana would no longer be illegal.  Also, marijuana would be exposed to the public, probably taking on the same "cool" label cigarettes have, and the youth would be influenced to go smoke some weed when they at least look like they're old enough.
But hey, on the bright side, all the stoners can finally be high and spend their days on couches legally, and the numbers would show illegal drug-violence reduced.

So...?

i dont think it should be legalized because once it does all the stoners will just be high all the time and not woory about getting in trouble for doing it, and it would be alot easier for kids to consume and that is really bad

Mexico is not our problem until it crosses our borders. Guard the borders and those going to Mexico be aware.

MJ reduces the nature of humans by making them less competitive.

Just ask the stoner he still at home on the couch.

I don't think it should be legalized it will just cause us to have to worry more about stoned drivers, while we also have to worry about drunk drivers. As Chris said Mexico is not our problem untill it comes to America.

i think kids are going to get high no matter what.. its already so easy now to obtain marijuana so at least if they leagalize it, violence will go down. And the people who are saying that there are going to be stoners on the couch all day not worried about getting caught.. There already are people like that!! .. its just like alcoholics sitting and drinking beers all day. People are gunna do what they want.. hopefully we can reduce violence and be responsible and smart enough to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

welllll jaymie, im pretty sure people are randomly high on the streets & driving around high all the time today even though marijuana isn't legal in the U.S. Just my personal opinion, but I don't see any immediate harm done if weed was legalized. Like the article states: "A 2005 study endorsed by hundreds of economists found that legalizing marijuana could save approximately $7.7 billion a year in government expenditures. Taxing it like alcohol or tobacco could generate another $6.2 billion in revenue. Thats enough to hire almost 350,000 new elementary school teachers or put 290,000 new police officers on the street. No one would hate the new policy more than Mexicos drug traffickers; after all, theyd be out of business. "

I think we should focus more on reducing illegal drug-violence rather than arguing about personal preferances.

I dont think that marijuana should be legalized because the drug cartel is going to win and we dont want that to happen.

Its our excessively high demand for drugs in the United States starting this violence. We need to curb demands and stop smuggling into the US.  We shouldn't legalize it, maybe Calderon will get it right one day and capture these drug cartel leaders.

 That is exactly what this is about.  Because, regardless of what you think, marijuana is a drug and it is illegal.  And yes, it does cause violence.
The topic is that they think legalizing marijuana would reduce the illegal drug-related violence in Mexico

no legalizing won't help.
i honestly think its gonna get worse.

if we legalize it, more trouble
for students especially. & adults

legalize = easier access to drugs which = more stoners.

 How would they be out of buisness it would just allow them to sell it legally :)

well of course people are walking around randomly high but think of how much worse it would be if there was no law prohibiting it. and of course there is no immediate affect. there isnt an immediate affect for somking either but you dont need a lesson on what happens later in life. if its money you are worried about then i think it would be better for gambling to be legalized. it doesnt have as much of an affect on the public

I agree with chris, Mexico is NOT our problem until it effects us. So i dont get why legalizing marijauna would help lower drug violence? It could possibly work but we should look for a diffrent solution than this. If legalizing marijauna s a solution, why do you think that would be the end of it? It will probably get worse or maybe move on to something else. I dont see the point of taking that risk for it when there are cleary other solutions.
