-An Arsenal fan in soccer-mad Kenya hanged himself wearing his beloved team's shirt after their defeat to Manchester United in the Champions League.
-Suleiman Omondi, 29, was found hanged at his home in a middle-class Nairobi estate shortly after leaving distraught from the pub where he had watched Arsenal lose 3-1 in their Champions League semi-final at the Emirates on Tuesday.
-"He took some drinks and broke down in tears within the final minutes of the match," a fellow bar patron, who asked not to be named, told Reuters.
-Police said they were called to Omondi's house on Wednesday morning. "What we are gathering is this suicide is related to the Arsenal and Manchester match," local Embakasi area police chief David Bunei told reporters.
Do people need to stop taking their team allegiance too far? I mean in most countries, every club team has a firm which is basically a group of supporters who look for the opposing team's supporters to fight. Do these sport clubs have a moral duty to convince people to not do these behaviors (commiting suicide, killing opponent fans, rioting...)?
thats really sad. being a devoted fan is one thing, but some people forget that its JUST A GAME! this man could very possibly have had some mental instability.
i think sports are so futile. its silly. why would a man hang himself over an issue as minute as that? i lost any allegiance to sports after johnny damon shaved his beard, cut his hair and moved to the yankees. the one guy who didnt give a darn about anything, who rocked his style well- he sold out. we're livng in a world of sellouts. there is no soul left. this is why mankind is doomed. not because of the economy, or swine flu, or loss of god. its the lack of soul. good luck.
People who aren't extremely devoted to a team or sport don't understand at all. It's not about the money, and it's not about instability. It's about Loyalty...but he DID take it too far by killing himself.
If you don't follow the EPL closely, you won't understand, nor will you ever understand the amount of competition between these teams. They're literally the top teams in all of England, and possibly Europe, and if you don't know anything about it, then you never will. The devotion for your team and competition between others is something that CANT be explained to someone who doesn't feel it for themselves..an "outsider," as it were.
