banning and restriciting hugging???

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30980849/

Some schools have banned hugs or imposed a three-second rule on gesture.....

Girls embracing girls, girls embracing boys, boys embracing each other the hug has become the favorite social greeting when teenagers meet or part these days. Teachers joke about one hour and six hour hugs, saying that students hug one another all day as if they were separated for the entire summer.

A measure of how rapidly the ritual is spreading is that some students complain of peer pressure to hug to fit in. And schools from Hillsdale, N.J., to Bend, Ore., wary in a litigious era about sexual harassment or improper touching or citing hallway clogging and late arrivals to class have banned hugging or imposed a three-second rule.

Parents, who grew up in a generation more likely to use the handshake, the low-five or the high-five, are often baffled by the close physical contact. Its a wordless custom, from what Ive observed, wrote Beth J. Harpaz, the mother of two boys, 11 and 16, and a parenting columnist for The Associated Press, in a new book, 13 Is the New 18.

Comforting as the hug may be, principals across the country have clamped down. Touching and physical contact is very dangerous territory, said Noreen Hajinlian, the principal of George G. White School, a junior high school in Hillsdale, N.J., who banned hugging two years ago. It was needless hugging they are in the hallways before they go to class. It wasnt a greeting. It was happening all day.

Schools that have limited hugging invoked longstanding rules against public displays of affection, meant to maintain an atmosphere of academic seriousness and prevent unwanted touching, or even groping.

So, what do you guys think of this, are people getting "too affectionate"?

:)

sometimes its gross if people are just going at it but i think affection is a positive thing to show in public, public sex i would say is pushing it but i think would be ok if it was in a designated area away from little kids

Public sex is straight up indecent...this isn't Europe.

Are we really discussing outlawing hugging? Come one people it's not baby making it's just a sign of admiration and respect. I don't know what the school boards do for fun but it's not a hugfest that's for sure.

well i think people should be able to do if they wanted to, its not a government funded program or some kind of obligation like paying taxes. if you want to have  romantic evening in the park, hey go for it!

I went to private school before coming to Eldo, we couldn't hug the opposite sex ever. School policy; beheading was the punishment.

Well a romantic night in the park is WAYYY different than public sex. Would you appreciate seeing two people do the no-pants-dance while you're walking through a park? I know I wouldn't.

I'm OK with hugs, but how about a "Keep Your Tongue in Your OWN Mouth" policy?!  Really, there are some things we just DON'T need to see at school....

thats the thing, its a designated area with signs, you know what you are getting into, and although i dont personally like to watch, i could appreciate the romantic message

I've seen way to many articles about when some random school in the middle of Kansas bans hugging, shouldn't this just be solved with the school board or something?

It sounds to me that there were problems with hugging in that particular school its probally just tempory this even happend in my middle school.

This seems a little over the top. I can understand preventing public make-out sessions but hugs are hugs. The people making these rules should go to some country like Ecuador where students greet each other with a kiss on the cheek.

i think in a sense people make out at school and stuff isnt right. no one wants to see that when walking to class. people shouldnt even be doing that, i wouldnt feel right making out at school were my friends are around me and teachers its just weird. but to try and make rules against hugging is stupid. little crossing the line, hugs are harmless. and i have never hugged anyone at school for along time so teaChers need to chill it we have to sit in there class forever anyway. ha

YOU CAN"T BAN HUGGING!!!!!!!!! AAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! is nothing sacred anymore?!?!?!?! seriously, people love to take something good and make it bad. hugs are one of my favoite things in the world. every day i give hugs to many of my freinds, both male and female. theres no inappropriate sexual connotation with it. its just a hug. half the girls i hug are dating my best friends, anyways. i'm like their gay friend, but i'm not gay. hahah. and there's nothing wrong with a good, strong, man to man hug. it shows comfort with ones sexuality. ya, like they said about public sex, thats out of control. and couples just sucking each other's facs off in front of the world- that can be kept private. but hugging is simple and pure. and hugs are always free, with no strings attached. hugs brighten peoples days! i'm going to hug as much as i can for the rest of the day.

hugging..are we so. thats wrong.....why not focus on something like the tonsel hockey most people play with eachother on the way to classes. i understand affection and stuff but come one you will see the person in less then an hour. banning hugging or making a limit of three seconds is weird. whoever brought this up must be way bored or has a bad experiance with hugs. or straight up never gets em. that sucks. word to most everyone...hugs do brighten someones day and a good hug shouldnt have to wait till 2:45.

I beleive that this hugging issue is absolutley rediculous!!!! Hugging is a nice, friendly way of saying hi in todays world. If we were kissing everyone on the lips maybe i would agree that we should change a few things, but hugging is a very conservative greeting. :)
