Idol-ized Ellen?

Ellen DeGeneres plans to be a "nice" American Idol judge, replacing the "Nice AI Judge" spot currently held by Paula Abdul.

Is it important to have one judge who will refrain from comments like "That's the worst singing I've ever heard in my life," or would AI be a better/more popular show if all of the judges were harsh?  Is is acceptable to have a judge like Ellen who has no background in singing or does it hurt the credibility of the show?

Is the draw of American Idol the singing or the judging?   Why is it such a popular show? (I don't watch it myself...my reality TV tastes run more to Top Chef and The Amazing Race...but it is a BIG moneymaker for FOX)

I used to be an avid American Idol fan, to the point where I planned my life around making sure I never missed an episode. While I LOVE that it is a good way for otherwise unknown, but immensely talented individuals to get their start, I feel that the producers of this program need to make some MAJOR changes regarding this show. In my humble opinion, there is NO need for so called "professional" judges. It is very rare that America's voting decisions coincide with the opinions of the "judges", who in reality, have no effect on the ultimate outcome of the show. However, if those at Fox continue to believe judges are necessary to the function of this program, I think adding Ellen DeGeneres to the team is wonderful. Yes, she has no background in music, but that reaches out a bit more to the opinions of the general public, and therefore may provide a better relationship between the judges on this program and the Americans who watch this program and attempt to call in for hours after it's conclusion to submit their votes.

I think bringing Ellen to the show adds some much needed comedic relief. The show's become too harsh and serious. After all, it's a reality singing competition decided by viewers voting most likely for their favorite personality rather than best voices. Hopefully this addition will make the show a bit lighter and help former viewers, such as myself, to enjoy the show again. Plus, I could definitely do without all of Paula's mindless babbling.

For me, the only 'fun' thing about american idol was the auditions. it's cause in the beginning you see the people you aren't good at singing and then you see some amazing people. i stopped watching american idol after kelly clarkson's win, but i guess many people still watch it? the thing about the judges is that i think they all have concepts. like randy will give you constructive criticizm while still making you feel good, and simon is just harsh and ellen will just make everything sound good haha. but anywho she's ellen! she can make anything better :)

I agree. The hilarious auditions are the only good part of Idol. I'm all for Ellen.

I think adding Ellen to the show could help American Idol a lot. She is very funny and it can be to serious at times, even to harsh. So even though she is not in the music industry I think it would be great to have her on the show! :)

Personally i don't think Ellen should be a judge on the show. It's not that i don't think Ellen is hilarious, because she is. However, American Idol is a signing talent competition. She has no background in singing why should she be allowed to judge other singers? That's like saying a soccer player could go judge a cheerleading competition becuase they are a nice person. I think they need to get a professional in there with a good personality.

As much as I love Ellen and think she's hilarious, I dont think she is exactly qualified to be judging a singing competition with no singing experience or involvement in the music industry. Something like this occured when she guest judged for So You Think You Can Dance, having no professional dancing or dance world involvement, she acted as simply an entertainment factor, much like her new spot on American Idol. Though I dont think she's qualified, she was hilarious on So You Think You Can Dance, and I'm sure will bring a lot of viewers to American Idol. Also, people decide for themselves whether or not they like a singer, so the judges dont truely have to be that qualified for they are not making any drastic decisions.

I dont believe that they should choose to have a judge who has no background in singing on a show entirely based on singing. I think it would be much smarter to pick someone with some experience and knowledge of the profession.

I think she would add humor to the show.
