The Future of Prime Time

The Jay Leno Show has been hugely watched this week, defying predictions that his audience would be huge for its first show and then decline thereafter.

http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/17/a-winning-wednesday-for-leno-and-nbc/

Does the (at least early!) sucess of Leno-at-Prime-Time, on the heels of the dominance of reality television, indicate that conventional TV (sitcoms and drama) is a thing of the past?  Or does the success of Leno + shows like The Office (genius!) indicate that NBC is at the top of its game in choosing shows?  Is this a reflection of the economy (cheaper to pay out reality prizes than to pay actors' salaries; cheaper to pay one talk show host than a cast of a sitcom)

Are there shows out there (Glee? 30Rock? Grey's Anatomy?) that you think are bringing conventional TV back?  Or are there reality shows (America's Got Talent? So You Think You Can Dance?  Biggest Loser?) that you think are so good, they're replacing the need for writers and actors?

What's the BEST THING ON TV RIGHT NOW (or at least, coming soon in the fall season)?

In the coming fall season, the best thing that will be starting up on TV is Hockey ;)

Well, if one doesn't count sports (and if they do, professional and college football are likely the biggest commodities), then I would say The Office is probably the biggest show. Then again, a lot of people seem to like this new show "Glee".

The Office is always amazing.
But the BEST show on TV now is "Glee" on Fox. It's a musical comedy and absolutely fantastic. I would recommend it to all.

i think there should be less reality shows and more shows with a written script like the office and glee...ect. because reality tv is getting old and they all seem the same to me.

I think primetime television is pretty much amazing lately. With scripted shows such as The Office, Glee, and Gossip Girl (all of which I refuse to miss a single episode) and reality shows such as So You Think You Can Dance, America's Got Talent, and Wipeout (hilarious), I think there is always something great to watch on....whether it be reality or scripted. For those who think primetime tv today isnt on the top of its game (though we have lost some greats such as Friends and Will&Grace), its all about knowing what to watch....distinguishing the originals (Greys Anatomy) from the copycats (Private Practice), and finding shows that are actually GOOD and ORIGINAL....not cheesy or "done before".  I think that there is success among sitcoms today, and that there isnt really a decrease in need for actors....especially with the immense amount of channels and variety of shows on not just in primetime but throughout the day.Gossip-Girl-Cast-gossip-girl-68568_626_484.jpg

oh! for real, the office is the best. the actors are just stunning making it really seem like a reality show. but i have to say, my favorrite primetime show would HAVE to be Supernatural. it's really unique and with me being Catholic i understand everything that's going on in the show. demons, lucifer, angel and heaven. it's amazing. and those producers really do their research and make everything so accurate when it comes to the Bible. They twang and overexaggerate things, but it's what makes the show so awesome and keeping you at the edge of your seat. but nontheless, i have to agree with The Office but i recommend Supernatural, and also the two main characters [Jared Padelacki and Jensen Ackels] are a real treat to look at :]

I think the recent success of many new scripted shows is a great departure from most of the reality television junk that's been crowding the prime time slots in the last few years. Although I enjoy some talent competion shows like So You Think You Can Dance, I can't stand the reality shows with no real point and are all about creating drama. Give me something with comedic substance and great writers.

I think there should be more scripted shows then reality shows because it seems to me that scripted shows seem to suck people in more, and reality show seem to just be there if you get bored and there is nothing else to watch.

They should make a network that only plays the videos of the beheadings... Americans should not be allowed to forget how blood thirsty our enemies have become.

I totally agree with AmericaFyeah. Most people who are pushing for the USA to pull out of Iraq either don't know of the atrocities our enemy committs, or they try to cover it up so that no one else knows how horrible they are. America needs to be reminded how come we are in this war and why we will continue to stay in the war. Just look at the quote in my sig: Americans never quit.
