Costa Rica: No military, excellent coffee, unbeatable beaches. And thanks to this weekend's election of Laura Chinchilla as the nation's first female president, there will be no support for gay rights at the executive level.
She'll pick up where her mentor the sitting president Oscar Arias and National Liberation Party member left off. And among the fast-facts being distributed by the media (so outlets like us can quickly spit out an item about the election!), Chincilla is a social conservative opposing gay marriage. The president-elect, meanwhile, is happily married hrself.
Arias, meanwhile, previously designated May 17 as National Day Against Homophobia, but also approved a ban on gays donating blood. Looks like another term of mixed messages.
What do you think Chinchilla should do about gay rights?
