A 10-year-old British boy has become the first child to undergo a windpipe transplant with an organ crafted from his own stem cells. The doctors injected his bonemarrow into a windpipe piece that was crafted special for his throat. The stem cells in his bone marrow that were injected into the windpipe piece are expected to turn into the specialized cells of his trachea. He was born with Long Segment Congenital Tracheal Stenosis which means he had an extremely narrow trachea which kept him from breathing. He has had many different surgeries for this disorder but they were all either failed or rejected from his body. This is the only surgery that has worked and he is now breathing normally. Doctor's say that is a an amazing procedure that should be done more often for people since its so versatile and successful. Also, since the stem cells are created from your own body.
What is your view on stem cell procedures? Also answer the poll. Do you think that the U.S. should allow stem cell transplants and graphs in a greater abundance? Do you not like the idea of the current stem cell research that is going on in which the stem cells are not from your own body but from an unborn fetus?
See I like the idea that it can heal someone intensely. i just don't like the fact that it is from an unborn baby. If we allow it stem cell research will probably go farther because we have amazing scientist who can research very well. Its just the babies...
I deffinatley agree with the stem cell process as long as it is helping people and if it was someones only option. if its saving lives its a good thing
Yay for stem cells! I can't wait to see what more could do with stem cell research in the future. It would really be a great step for the medical world.
i dont think that this is a good idea because they are creating a little baby than killing it to find out cures for stuff is a good idea. but it could be a good idea to find cures for things. this is a subject that is hard to deal with
i think that stem cell research is a good thing because you are able to create new body organs or anything that your body naturally creates and if we are able to manipulate that then we could have organs waiting for us in case we need them instead of having to wait for an organ donor
